Unity Girls Project

To enable a member of staff to run a range of activities and opportunities for young girls aged 10-15 living in the borough of Tower Hamlets. With many of these girls coming from Ethnic minority backgrounds we want to offer them a chance to realise their aspirations and reach their life goals.

  • Need

Young girls from Tower Hamlets, primarily from Ethnic minority background, are in need of a safe place to go after school which runs activities and offers opportunities to help them develop their skills in an encouraging environment.

We can offer these girls a safe place to come and we will run numerous activities and workshops in order to develop their skills and help them become the person they want to be. We will work flexibly, taking the time to listen to their needs and steer opportunities in those directions.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

For at least 20-30 young girls from the local borough to attend regular sessions

» Sports: We will encourage girls to take part in martial arts classes as well as football and basketball.
» Arts and crafts: We will offer a quieter session where girls can sit around a table to make things/paint and talk freely about school/family/life.
» Skills: This will be an opportunity for the girls to learn a new skill and will depend on what their interests are. An example could be cooking.

    What success will look like

This will be demonstrated by the number of girls signing into the session each week.

  • Impact

The aim of this project will be to engage with girls from the local area and help them understand what they want to achieve in their life by offering ideas and opportunities. In the long term we hope that this project takes off and becomes more popular so that we get a chance to grow and develop the project, perhaps offering similar support to older girls.

One risk could be that we don't have a qualified youth worker to lead the sessions.
We would send this member of staff on training prior to the project starting.
Another risk could be that we get very few girls interested in the project, but we have a lot of girls interested at the moment and believe that once the word gets around and girls start bringing their friends there will not be a shortage of members.

We will regularly update our facebook/twitter and instagram account for those donors who use social media. We will also send regular reports to donors via email to let them know about the happenings in the project as well as any highlights.

  • Background

The community centre is based in the borough of Tower hamlets in East London, 14th most deprived Ward in London with over 50% of children living in poverty (Weavers Ward).
There is a large Bangladeshi community in the area which means that the rates of employment and poverty levels are high.

Girls between the ages of 10-15 from the local community will benefit from this project.
St Hilda's East will also benefit from the project because we will be running another service.
Families from the local community will also benefit from the project because activities will be available for their daughters.
