    Need

    We will support people 50+ living in the Bridgend affected by mental health illness, emotional issues and/or learning disabilities. Some people over 50 experience a decline in social networks due to retirement, bereavement, relationship breakdowns or ill health which can lead to an increased sense of isolation and loneliness.

    Solution

    The befriending service provides volunteer support to increase self-confidence, independence and active engagement in the community. The scheme’s main aim is also to tackle discrimination and stigma by being transparent and inclusive by taking people right into the heart of their community.

    Aim 1

    One-to-One Volunteer Befriending

    Activities

    » Offer face-to-face contact with a Volunteer playing a proactive role in helping the beneficiary to build confidence to develop new social skills.

    MHM Wales will monitor all Volunteers through their time with MHM Wales Including Time, Training and Personal Development


    Aim 2

    Group Activity Befriending

    Activities

    » Group befriending offers opportunities to exchange information and share concerns with others who have similar experiences and difficulties.

    Using a our emotional well-being tool which will be used with the individual to monitor their process and identify the small steps they have taken to reach their goal


    Aim 3

    Telephone Befriending

    Activities

    » provides support via a telephone link to beneficiaries in their own homes. Delivered by staff and volunteers, this service complements the project

  • Impact

    Impact

    Older people who have become/or are at risk of increased isolation due to mobility, physical disability and serious medical health issues often find it difficult to engage in mainstream activities. contact can reduce the feeling of loneliness and isolation; improving well-being and quality of life as a vital lifeline.
    The Groups will provide individuals with a shared interest, the opportunity to meet in a group on a regular basis & exchange information and share concerns with others.

    Risk

    Risks could include an over reliance on the Befriender we aim to support these older people to become more independent and self reliant.
    Duplication:
    Currently there is no service like this in the area and there fore we are avoiding any duplication.
    Funding
    We aim to develop this service to become sustainable creating an individual giving program, applying the trust and foundations and statutory bodies once established

    Reporting

    We will Provide Quarterly reports to the donors which will be outcome and evidenced based and include case studies and feed back form the persons gaining support

    Bridgend County Borough is continually diversifying and it is important to work with the community to actively to identify the many changing issues which affects those affected by mental health, MHM Wales prides itself on being community owned and driven which allows us to continue to maintain a high level of understanding of community needs. Bridgend County Borough is one of the most deprived socio-economic in Wales

    Why Us?

    MHM Wales is a local charity initially called Ogwr MIND which was set up in 1985 within Bridgend to provide supported accommodation and drop-in services for those experiencing mental health related problems and issues. Since 1985, we have grown as a charity and now provide a variety of different services and projects which not only support those with mental health related problems and issues but also services and projects supporting general wellbeing.
