  • Need

    Need

The most frequent kind of purse theft is 'handbag dipping', where offenders remove purses from handbags left unzipped or unattended. Once the purse is stolen, bank cards are often used by offenders very quickly, frequently even before the victim realises the purse has been taken. Although older people are statistically no more likely to be victims, they have an above average fear of crime and of going out.

    Solution

Security chains reduce the risk of people becoming a victim of crime, reducing the fear of crime and the fear of going out. They help to make people feel safer when they go out into the community, especially when shopping. They can also reduce the risk of falls when bending down to pick up keys.

  • Impact

    Impact

Older residents and their families will know that there is a source of security chains available in order to make them feel safer in the community. We will continue to make them available, not only at specific events, and to monitor their uptake and reported impact on beneficiaries.

    Risk

Insufficient number of volunteers: we have a dedicated volunteer management service which is responsible for recruiting and training volunteers and matching them to relevant projects.

Retailers not willing to provide locations: we have excellent relationships with many retailers and have run campaigns such as Bag Packing at Christmas in local stores.

    Reporting

Donors to this project will receive a monthly email report including pictures of events and feedback from beneficiaries.

  • Background

    Location

The proportion of the population of Essex who are aged 65 or over is 18.3% (the national average is 16%). Of the 14 local authorities across the geographical area of Essex, 10 have a higher percentage of 60+, 70+ and 85+ than the national average. The population aged over 65 is expected to increase by 45% by 2021, with the numbers of people aged 85 expected to rise by 75%.

    Beneficiaries

5,000 older residents in Essex will benefit directly, but there will also be an increase in confidence about their safety among their family and carers.
