Surviving Winter - Northamptonshire

The Surviving Winter appeal aims to save lives and help isolated and vulnerable elderly people.
The winter can be one of the hardest seasons to get through for the most vulnerable in our community due to social isolation and the cold. Every penny raised will be passed to those in greatest need.

  • Need

    Need

Our recent Hidden Needs research reports that the highest area of population growth in our county is people aged 65 & over, accounting for 17.3% of the population. With many of these people living alone, & with concerns over social isolation & the cold over the winter months, promoting independent living by supporting individuals to keep warm, safe & secure is paramount.

Winter deaths from causes directly linked to the cold & poor living conditions in this, the 21st century, are preventable.

    Solution

We aim to work to reduce the number of social isolated and vulnerable elderly people in Northamptonshire who die from the cold and poor living conditions to 0.

Funds raised will be distributed directly to individuals as well as local organisations dedicated to helping the elderly and vulnerable within our county. From provision of ‘Keep Warm ‘ packs , to hot meals and social activities at local centres are but a few examples of ways funding raised will help towards solving this problem.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To keep elderly people warm and well during the winter months

    Activities

» We will find local community groups who work with elderly people to provide grants for heating and support to make their homes more energy efficient.

    What success will look like

An impact report evidencing how many people have been helped will be available at the end of the campaign.

    Aim 2

To reduce social isolation in Northamptonshire

    Activities

» We will provide funding to community groups to help them organise social events for the elderly.

    What success will look like

An impact report evidencing how many people have been helped will be available at the end of the campaign.

  • Impact

    Impact

The project will reduce fuel poverty and social isolation in Northamptonshire. This will be demonstrated through the work we will do with our partners throughout the campaign.

A detailed impact report highlighting the successes of the campaign will be available from March 2019.

    Risk

The biggest risk is the weather. If we have a mild winter it can effect how much people give to the campaign.

At the event of a mild winter, the campaign will focus more on social isolation and will encourage donors to give to community projects rather than warm and well projects.

    Reporting

We will provide an impact report listing the successes of the campaign during spring 2019.

£250 admin Campaign literature, advertisement and letters to key donors asking for support
  • Background

    Location

The campaign takes place across Northamptonshire.

Research estimates that 1320 older people aged 65-74 live alone in Northamptonshire. Given that a high proportion of older people live alone in the county, & the concerns over increased isolation, promoting independent living by supporting individuals to keep warm, safe & secure is key.

We will work with local community groups working with the elderly to provide them with the support they need to reduce fuel poverty & social isolation.

    Beneficiaries

Socially isolated and vulnerable elderly people across Northamptonshire.
