LGBT Domestic Violence Project

Domestic abuse in LGBT community is a serious issue. About 25% of LGBT people suffer through violent or threatening relationships with partners or ex-partners which is about the same rates as domestic abuse against heterosexual women. We want to employ a worker who can support the LGBT Community.

  • Need

Unlike in opposite-gendered couples, the problem of Domestic Violence (DV) is underreported. Those involved in same-gender abuse are often afraid of revealing their sexual orientation or the nature of their relationship.
The abused partner often suffers different types of abuse such as emotional bullying, physical aggression, threats to harm the victim or other loved ones, social isolation and control of finances. The project hopes to tattle these issues and support this under supported group.

The support worker would raise awareness around the issues of domestic violence in the LGBT community. They would work one to one with clients providing a specialist service. The support worker would understand the barriers faced by the LGBT community and be able to work with the client to to deal with the issues surrounding DV. This may include securing their home to allow the client to stay put, providing support in court and providing emotional support.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To raise awareness of domestic violence in the LGBT community.

» We would work with local groups in Bradford to make them aware of the new service, the issues around DV in the LGBT community and support available.
» We would use the new website we are developing to provide information and advice. We would also use Twitter and Facebook.
» We would produce leaflets and other marketing material that we can give out at suitable events, like Bradford Pride.

    What success will look like

We will measure social media engagement around our campaign across social media. We will also track calls to the project, and meetings attended where we've provided information

    Aim 2

To provide 1 on 1 support for clients from the LGBT community both over the telephone and in person

» The worker would support the clients over the telephone and then one on one in suitable informal settings to provide more empathetic support.

    What success will look like

We will record the number of calls and in person meetings, track the progress of clients through our in-house DV specific software and record feedback from clients.

    Aim 3

To support clients through any court proceedings.

» The support worker would attend court with clients and provide emotional and specialist support as required.

    What success will look like

We will record court visits and track the success in the clients files. We have specific DV software that we use with exciting clients to monitor services.

  • Impact

This would be a one year pilot project, a first for the Bradford area.
Bradford does not have the open LGBT community that many large cities have and the threat of being outed is quite high. Until the project is underway it is hard to determine the full extent of the need. However, we know that there has been in general increase in DV across Bradford as a whole and this projects key aim would be to raise awareness around LGBT DV which would be measured through measuring engagement.

The fear of reporting domestic violence may be so high that no clients come forward and we are unable to support people in any number. We will deal with this by providing clients with a range of different ways of accessing the service - phone, in person, via our website and through Facebook and social media. We believe that the more traction we get around this difficult subject the more people will feel safe to come forward and look for support.

We currently use a client monitoring system that allows us to track and provide detailed reports around our work. We would provide relevant statistics and as information became available write case studies that can go to funders but also up on our website to help support others.
