Legal advice and advocacy for asylum seekers
We seek funding for an immigration lawyer for a period of twelve months to provide free, independent, high-quality legal advice to asylum seekers throughout the Leeds area. This position will include legal advice and representation in the Immigration Tribunal.
Charity information: Manuel Bravo Project
In the context of legal aid cuts and more stringent legal aid merit standards, asylum seekers are finding it increasingly difficult to access free, high-quality legal services.
Our charity provides free, independent, high-quality legal advice and representation to clients who would otherwise be left to negotiate the legal system on their own. Donations from the Big Give will go directly to fund the work of a qualified experienced immigration lawyer to take on 45-50 asylum appeals and fresh claims and give them the very best chance of success.

What success will look like
We will collate and monitor the outcomes of the cases for which we provide representation.
Any time an asylum seeker receives free, independent legal advice, their confidence in the system improves and the chances of success are increased. We take on the most challenging cases, and so we consider a success rate of 10-15% to be a positive result. High quality representation before the Immigration Tribunal improves the quality of decision making overall and contributes to the positive development of refugee law. Finally, grants of leave in the UK mean saved lives.
The main risk to our work is the ongoing lack of funds for legal work. We depend on our relationships with volunteers and donors to help us maintain our work and assist as many asylum seekers as possible.
We will provide anonymised updates on casework throughout the year and statistical analysis of outcomes at the end of the twelve-month period.
