Cyber Cafe

To create a young people's 'day centre' space for young people referred to our hospice service. Young people with life limiting illnesses are living longer and are now increasingly referred into adult hospice care. We would like to create a facility in our centre that they can enjoy.

  • Need

Many young people facing life limiting illnessess are now living longer and being referred into adult hospice care. The challenge for us is to create environments that young people want to be in. Because most of our care has traditionally been for older people, our centre and facilities appear very traditional and do not appeal to young people. Additionally, our day centre services are used almost exclusively by older people, so younger patients are put off attending regularly.

Our project seeks to revamp one of our day centre rooms to become a 'cyber cafe' - a space for young people to come to instead of 'day centre' and to meet other young people facing life limiting illnesses. We would like to install internet, film & music making facilities as well as creative art facilities and 'chill out' space including soft furnishings and tea / coffee etc and ensure suitable accessibility for those in wheelchairs

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To create a welcoming, vibrant space for young patients to enjoy

» Undertake revamp of the current facilities, including painting, new equipment, flooring etc.

    What success will look like

Our day centre will be rennovated to include excellent creative arts, film and music making facilities, developed in consultation with the young people using the space.

    Aim 2

Through the provision of appropriate space for young people, provide respite for their carers

» Provide engaging and vibrant space for young people to enjoy attending. Their attendance creates respite for their carers.

    What success will look like

Carers and guardians will be able to enjoy our hospice conservatory or go home whilst their relative is in our care, providing valuable respite time.

  • Impact

We will have more appropriate space for young people to enjoy.

Young people will benefit socially and physically from attendance at the cyber cafe.

We will demonstrate this by the completion of the physical renovation and by the numbers of young people using the space

Risk is that we cannot raise enough money to provide the space - we are planning a fundraising strategy to ensure we can deliver this project

Risk is that we will continue to encounter new accessibility issues as patients with different conditions are referred - our fundraising strategy will enable us to provide ongoing funding as required; additionally many patients have their own equipment tailored to their needs that they can use.

In line with donors' requirements but this can be through short report, photographs, feedback from patients and carers and medical staff

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We are Cardiff's hospice care service; young adult patients referred to hospice care services in Cardiff will be referred to us and so if we don't do this, there is noone else who will.
