Rainforest Canopy Walkway - The Weather Maker

The Eden Project shows the importance of rainforests and what people can do to help save them. We want The Weather Maker to bring together cutting-edge climate science with unique interpretation, to tell the story of the rainforest as protector and regulator of the world's climate.

September 2016 - December 2016

  • Need

The Weather Maker will explore a vital issue of our time - save the rainforests, they help regulate the world's climate. A generation that does not understand or value the natural world will not strive to protect it, but Eden is uniquely placed to demonstrate the vital role rainforests play in all our lives and to inspire us to take action.

We want to create an immersive learning space filled with dials, thermometers, floating weather balloons, hygrometers, and fully operational weather-monitoring equipment. This functional weather station will also tell the story about how rainforests control the earth’s climate. What's more, our school visitors will be able to use authentic equipment to produce genuine measurements of conditions in the Biome. We aim to link from here to canopy scientists and meteorologists working in the field.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Discover how rainforests make rain, absorb CO2, create clouds and regulate the world's climate.

» Rain Roof – a new rain room where visitors can experience the power of the weather and understand the importance of the rainforest and climate.
» Circulation Station – an existing platform will be added to with a wind machine for atmospheric circulation.
» The Cloud Bridge - a suspended rope bridge, which will provide excitement and movement and will include misting to create a 'fog-like' effect.
» Carbon Platform - a high level platform with space for interpretation about the carbon cycle.

    What success will look like

We'll provide an immersive rainforest field station /classroom/living laboratory for visitors and education groups with interpretation creating an improved educational experience.

  • Impact

We'll offer an immersive education experience to nearly 1 million visitors per year and give them a new understanding of; scientific principles, the science underpinning the natural world, the importance of scientific research, the relationship between rainforests and climate, and the link between research, rainforest conservation and climate change. We will inspire an emotionally-engaged audience of all ages, abilities and interests with an energy and desire to care and get involved.

The build team who completed Phase 1 of the Rainforest Canopy Walkway on time and on budget have developed expertise working in the Rainforest Biome environment. Secured development funding has enabled us to start research on the complex stories and create, evaluate and consolidate plans. Draft schematics, project plans and timelines, and a full budget have all been prepared.

Updates on the project will be provided via acknowledgement communications to donors, and further communications when the project is completed with an invitation to view the completed development. Impact of The Weather Maker will be assessed and reported on in our annual reports.

  • Background

The Eden Project in Cornwall is a science centre and educational charity. We transformed a derelict quarry into a world-leading environmental education centre to demonstrate that humans could have a positive impact on their environment. We grew the largest rainforest in the UK so that millions of people could experience the scale and importance of vast rainforest systems. The Weather Maker will be located inside our awe-inspiring Rainforest Biome.

Since opening in 2001 Eden has attracted over 18 million visitors. We currently receive around 850,000 visitors a year including mixed family groups, adult groups, overseas tourists, hard-to-reach and disadvantaged groups and our schools programme hosts over 47,000 school children every year. We have regular offers for the local Cornish and Devonian community and also work to engage those who are not typically reached by science centres. Around 95% of our visitors visit the Canopy Walkway.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Eden has the world's largest rainforest in captivity, and is the best placed destination in the UK to bring the story of the rainforest as the protector and regulator of the world's climate to life.

Rainforest is the glue that holds the climate of our planet together. Lose the forest and it will have devastating consequences for all life on earth.
