Access to arts is known to have a lasting and transformational effect on communities and many aspects of people's lives. With calligraphy and marbling we aim to attract young Muslim women in Tower Hamlets to motivate them to achieve goals in their lives and to be more engaged within the community.

News stories have broken out within the recent years of young women and girls becoming radicalised through social media propaganda and interactions with so called Islamic State members, calling young Muslim women to join them.We are faced with a vast responsibility to counter these thoughts and actions in due time. As these vulnerable young women and girls, disenfranchised from British society become won over by extremist thoughts, harming themselves, hurting families and society as a whole
Count Art aims to reach vulnerable young women and girls to allow them to vent out their cognitive thinking process through Islamic art, which would help analyse any negative thoughts towards society. These group sessions during art production will foster integration and social cohesion between all people present during the session. The positive impacts embraced through these mentor sessions should ultimately assist them to imagine and work towards a healthy individual in society.
To establish art as a form of early intervention in countering radicalisation and extremism
Activities» To form an Islamic art (calligraphy and marbling) workshop with local artists and young girls which will consist of 5-7 girls in each group.
At the beginning and at the end of the project we will hand out questionnaires with questions devised from experts to seek the difference and the impact of art overall.
To establish a rapport between the mentor, mentee and volunteers
Activities» The mentor, an expert in psychological assessment, will analyse the young girls' art work and gain information from the volunteers about the girls
As this project also aims at capacity building for volunteers, the volunteers can create a report to explaining the relationship built between the mentor and mentee (young girls).
The ability to utilize marbling and calligraphy as a tool of engaging and encouraging young girls to express feelings of extreme thought, explore their exclusion from society, empowering their sense of contribution and to learn a new skill.
The risk of young girls being emotionally overwhelmed and disrupt the progress of other young girls in the art classes, or becoming disengaged with the task at hand. For these risky situations, the volunteers will be equipped as they will be trained for what to expect and how to deal with difficult situations. The volunteer pool will be narrowed down to students/graduates from a clinical psychology background wherein they have faced similar experiences and are able to calm the students.
The reports will be termly, usually 3 terms excluding half terms, which will give us the opportunity to write up the progress of the students and whether we have decided to alter the course. There will also be an annual report at the end of the school year which will decide the continuation.

The location of the project will be set in areas wherein young women and girls are unable to reach after school activities, such as art workshops and the professional and expert opinion to necessitate help if needed. The location set for the project will be in East London, specifically the Tower Hamlets area which is a deprived area of London with the majority of residents from an ethnic minority background and Muslim background.
The vulnerable young girls we seek to target will be residing in East London and attend school there. Our audience will be young girls aged around 14-18 and of a Muslim background. The young girls will still be attending their high school which we will be able to advertise and market at ease with the help of their school. The young girls will be able to join the art workshops, gain a new insight into Islamic art and culture, be surrounded by a community and be joined by expert artists.
London Centre for Social Studies (LCSS), with the success of the Raising Expectations project receiving over £10,000 from the Big Lottery Fund, we have carried out a mentoring project for disadvantaged youth in low socio-economic areas of London to help them understand the process of higher education and encourage their understanding of attaining a degree. The youth we were in contact with developed a mentorship programme with our volunteers and we helped establish their needs.
