  • Need

Recent research Bristol University found that England has the highest rate of sexual coercion for teenage girls in Europe as well as physical violence and intimidation in in relationships. A high proportion of teenage boys regularly view pornography, and also harbour negative attitudes towards women. Schools may teach about safer sex ls, but not about healthy relationships. Teenagers badly need guidance on what is acceptable, and what is abuse.

We empower teenagers to make healthy choices about sex and relationships through our “Your Choice” course delivered in schools and youth clubs. We let young people know they are valuable, educate them about what a “good” relationship looks like, and what abuse looks like, support them to cope with pressure from peers and the media, help them find ways of standing up for themselves, and teach them that it’s always okay to say No.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    Teach teenagers about healthy relationships.

» Deliver 3 lessons or a half day workshop to teenagers in local secondary schools.
» Where possible train older pupils to help teach younger pupils

Teach our “Your Choice” course to 400 pupils with an outcome that they understand what a healthy relationship is. Also to involve young people in delivering this course

  • Impact

The project will increase young people’s knowledge about sex and relationships and how to avoid risky behaviour. We monitor the increase in awareness in this area by asking pupils to complete feedback forms before and after the course.

There is a risk that it can be difficult to make contact with the teacher responsible for PSHE in a school. We have developed relationships with local schools and also have learnt to make contact with governors and the PTA in these situations, which can help reduce this risk.

Donors to this project will receive a report each time we have completed a course in a school including feedback from the pupils and teachers.
