  • Need

    Need

£9.4m needs to be raised for our capital appeal to complete the building of our brand new hospice, offering the best care to those with life-limiting conditions and their families in North West Surrey now and for the future. We will provide in-patient, day, community and hospice at home services. We will have finished construction by December 2016 but need help to kit out our 20 rooms with all the equipment required so they can be up and running by April 2017.

    Solution

The Big Give Project will enable us to kit out our first brand new patient room with the necessary equipment including bed, mattress, bedding, a hoist, curtains, a TV and fridge to make it as comfortable as possible and to make it available for us by patients from April 2017.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To fully equip a new patient room to make it as comfortable as possible and available from April 17

    Activities

» Buying and installation of the equipment needed for the room to be comfortable and fully functioning by April 2017.

Patients using this room from April 2017 with positive feedback about comfort/facilities received.

  • Impact

    Impact

Funding of a room will speed up the completion of our new hospice and provide a comfortable and homely environment for patients and their families during a difficult time. It will set a benchmark for the quality of the other 19 rooms in the hospice. The provision of a sofa bed and will allow family members to stay overnight in comfort and spend valuable time with their loved ones.

    Risk

Opening of the new hospice or lack of funding could delay the installation of equipment into the room. The build is on schedule for completion in December, hence this project has been delayed until January/February to allow for any slippage, however, if this was to slip further the project can still go ahead later in the year. Funding is on track for full completion. Any equipment donated could be stored in a worse case scenario until completion.

    Reporting

We can provide photographs of the new room and equipment, feedback from patients who have used the room and an opportunity to visit the room when completed.

  • Background

    Location

Woking hospice and Sam Beare Hospice in Weybridge will be served by the new hospice in Woking. Together, we serve roughly one third of Surrey’s 1,135,400 population in the boroughs of Woking, Surrey Heath, Guildford, Elmbridge, Spelthorne and Runnymede from all socio-economic backgrounds.

    Beneficiaries

The hospice currently cares for 1200 patients a year. The estimate is that one room (funded by this project) will provide care for at least 35 patients and benefit their families and friends each year (average of 5 per patient) making a total average of 175 beneficiaries per year or 1750 over 10 years.
