  • Need

    Need

Historic architecture is continuously under threat. Buildings are at risk of neglect and decay, and the threat of demolition from developers and negligent owners. Frequently, historic buildings are seen as being unsuitable to accommodate modern requirements. Owners often see them as pensions on the state, and are unable to see the long term benefits of retaining historic architecture, both in terms of economic value and more broadly in terms of place making.

    Solution

SAVE’s message is one of hope: that old buildings can live again. By working with top architects and developers SAVE demonstrates how historic buildings can be sensitively and feasibly be brought back to life, while meeting the demands of today. The Fighting Fund also allows SAVE to pursue legal action where necessary, allowing SAVE to champion the importance of heritage in nationwide planning policy and in the health of our towns and cities.

    Aim 2

Work with a legal team to pull cases together to fight the destruction to historic buildings.

    Activities

» Work with established solicitors who provide their time at reduced rates or pro-bono to bring together legal challenges to harmful schemes.

The outcome of the legal challenge will lead to the threatened heritage asset being protected, or a change in planning policy to greater countrywide protection.

    Aim 3

Demonstrate that buildings can be kept from further deterioration.

    Activities

» Work with top conservation surveyors to demonstrate that at risk buildings can be kept from further deterioration, and are not a threat to the public.

The uptake of advise from surveyors that demonstrate that by following procedure buildings can be kept from further decay.

  • Impact

    Impact

The Fighting Fund will afford us the ability to take on campaigns and fight them with all the tools we have to our disposal, through alternative schemes, survey reports from experts, and legal action.

Successful campaigns will extend beyond the retention of historic buildings to allow greater access to historic architecture for all, and create inspiring and lively places to live and work which will last for many generations.

    Risk

The largest risk is that important examples of our architectural heritage are lost, meaning that the work of the

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

SAVE has been campaigning for threatened buildings for forty years. As an independent organisation we have the freedom to pursue campaigns that amenity societies are not.

Since 1975 SAVE's work has led to the retention of buildings such as Bank Side Power Station, now the location of the Tate Modern, Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, and Dumfries House, Ayrshire. SAVE frequently overcome powerful opposition to give a voice to threatened heritage.
