FAD - Fashioning a Difference!

The fashion industry can be perceived as an elitist and competitive world.

We believe that anyone with the talent and motivation to succeed should get a fair chance to get on in this exciting and fulfilling sector.

  • Need


    The fashion industry can be perceived as an elitist and competitive world. We believe that anyone with the talent and motivation to succeed should get a fair chance to get on in this exciting and fulfilling sector. We also believe that exploring creativity can help young people develop skills and attributes which will enable them to progress in many other career paths.


    Over a period of 12 months, we will give disengaged young people life skills - confidence and self-esteem- and technical skills through workshops run by specialists for the young people to learn about the industry, an insight into options available to them and, through the FAD mentoring scheme, will develop a network of peer and professional contacts increasing their education/employment prospects and make them job-ready.

    Disadvantaged young people improve life skills including confidence, initiative and problem-solving

    Through peer mentoring 80 young people develop greater resilience and improved ability to surmount social and economic barriers to progress in the creative industries

    Aim 2

    Disadvantaged young people develop technical skills to make them employable


    » Workshops led by specialists' to develop relevant skills such as research, design, sewing, pattern cutting and drawing to make them job ready

    What success will look like

    80 young people from 18 inner boroughs of London will have attended 60 hours of technical skills workshops preparing them for a progression in the creative sector

    Disadvantaged young people gain knowledge and insight into options available in creative industries

    What success will look like

    80 young people will have attended 20 hours of workshops on career advice and will have developed a personal progression plan

  • Impact


    We will make the fashion and creative industries more inclusive and will level the opportunities to access it
    - We will create a culture of giving and supporting disadvantaged young people among professionals in the fashion and creative industries
    - We will do case studies with success stories and will bring back to our programme the young people who progress as peer mentors

    We will demonstrate the success through evaluation of entry and exit questionnaires, feedback and interviews


    Young people not raising to the challenge and dropping. The peer mentoring will be essential to keep them motivated.
    Personal and family problems to facilitate progression - tailored advice and support


    End of project evaluation report to include:
    - analysis of entry and exit questionnaires showing increase in personal and technical skills
    - feedback from young people and from schools/colleges/youth groups from where young people are recruited
    - ongoing social media and website update

  • Background


    We will run workshops at two venues, in Hackeny and Lewisham, for 80 young people of up to 18 London boroughs (Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Barking & Dagenham, Camden, Islington, Enfield, Haringey, Westminster, Redbridge, Wandsworth, Lambeth, Southwark, Croydon, Lewisham, Bromley, Bexley & Greenwich)


    Young people from recognised disadvantaged backgrounds – ie single headed households,lower achieving ethnic groups, on free school meals, unemployed households or households in receipt of benefits, refugee/asylum seeker background or first generation to access HE. The majority (80%) will be from BME backgrounds. Some struggle with school and leave with few qualifications. Some are learning English as a second language, in or leaving care, young carers, dealing with bullying or family break up

    FAD has 15 years’ experience developing extra-curricular programmes delivered in non-formal educational formats, with more than 8,000 young people from diverse ethnic, social and economic backgrounds.
    FAD has a long, proven track record of working in partnerships with more than 100 schools/colleges
    FAD has a database of more than 400 professionals working in the major groups of the fashion industry
    FAD achievements have been recognised with awards from BITC and LEPA
