Improve teaching at primary schools in Kenya
A programme to improve the quality of learning and education in our partner schools by employing extra teachers and funding training & development opportunities.
There is a chronic shortage of government employed teachers in our partner schools, in common with many public schools across Kenya, particularly those in isolated rural areas. Similarly many of them are not equipped with adequate skills and knowledge due to a lack of training and development opportunities.
By employing extra teachers (as well as constructing sufficient classrooms) we help to reduce class numbers to low and manageable levels. We have plans to fund training seminars for teachers both at our partner schools and others in the region, to provide teachers with the opportunity to learn and develop skills which they can bring to the classroom.

Success will be ensuring that there are no untrained teachers working in our partner schools and improvements in both teacher and pupil performance.
The ultimate long-term objective of our work, including the funding of extra teachers, is to provide our partner schools with the capacity to deliver an education worth having and to improve the future prospects for the children they serve.
The employment of teachers by definition incurs regular, on-going costs. For a small charity with a fluctuating income stream there is a danger that we might find ourselves in a position where we are unable to meet our obligations. To mitigate this risk we have been careful not to over commit ourselves and are building up a large reserve of funds for this programme rather than funding it on a hand-to-mouth basis.

Our work is located in the isolated and impoverished region of Kasigau in rural south-east Kenya.

Our seven partner schools serve a total of 2,500 children, many from extremely disadvantaged backgrounds.
We have 8 years experience operating in the field. As a result we have established an extensive knowledge and understanding of the community in which we work. Furthermore, we have built close working relationships with our partner schools and local stakeholders, and have earnt a reputation for successfully implementing a range of projects and programme that deliver tangible change and development.
