  • Need

Rushmoor contains areas experiencing significant levels of deprivation which starkly contrast with neighbouring affluent areas. With an ageing population, health conditions, trips and falls as well as social isolation are some of the issues faced by the local community.

Rushmoor has a growing Nepali community (circa 13%) where a majority are vulnerable and elderly . They are unable to speak English, many are illiterate and unaware of and unable to access local services.

RHL offers low cost easily accessible Exercise Classes at community venues that give older people the opportunity to make steps towards better health while removing some of the barriers that would prevent participation at sports and leisure centres. The activities also encourage socials interaction with teas and coffees a feature at the end of the sessions.

Rehabilitation classes and steady and strong classes provide help and support to those with health conditions.

  • Impact

Through the project participants will develop peer support groups that will help them through future life changing events as well as helping them to be more active in their community .

Improved health through undertaking the project will enable participants to improve the quality of their life whether this is through improving mobility and balance after a fall or just becoming fitter through exercise.

There is a risk that the harder reach and vulnerable don't engage with the project so to make sure those with the greatest need get the help and support they need RHL works with GP surgeries and other community organisations to promote and refer participants to our activities.

Word of mouth is very prevalent in the Nepali community so the use of RHL volunteers is key on getting the message out, along side interview on Gurkha radio and The Everest Times.

Donors to this project will receive a yearly update on the progress and impact that the project is having.
