Classrooms for a Rural Ugandan School

All children deserve the opportunity to learn in a safe, clean environment. Uphill Junior School in Uganda offers a good quality kindergarten and primary education to all the children of the area, no matter their means, but the school has no money to build proper classrooms. We want to help.

  • Need

Many of the children at Uphill Junior School have lessons in rough wooden classrooms with mud floors. The learning environment is dirty and, in the rainy season, water comes in through the open spaces in the walls that serve as windows and doors. Noise travels throughout the building making it hard for the children to concentrate on their lessons. These temporary classrooms do not meet the required standards of the Ugandan Inspectorate of Schools.

The new classrooms will have concrete foundations, brick walls, glass windows and metal doors, providing a clean, dry learning environment where resources can be kept securely. Noise will be contained within each classroom and a wide verandah will provide a dry outdoor area. Each classroom will provide enough space for 30-50 children, sufficient for the schools' needs into the future. Classrooms built in this way meet the requirements of the Ugandan Inspectorate of Schools.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To build ten classrooms to house seven primary classes and three kindergarten classes

» Classroom Block 1 will house Primary 5-7. Construction of this block began in March 2016 and was completed in January 2017
» Classroom Block 2 will house Primary 1-4. Construction is planned for 2019 and fundraising is underway
» Classroom Block 3 will house the 3 years of Kindergarten: Baby, Middle and Top Class (planned for 2021)

    What success will look like

The aim will have been met when all 10 classrooms have been built, plastered inside and out and painted inside and out

  • Impact

The project will provide Uphill Junior School with high quality classrooms that meet the standards required by the Ugandan Inspectorate of Schools. This will be demonstrated by a successful school inspection visit with no outstanding building standards requirements.

The children of Uphill Junior School will have the opportunity to learn within clean and well appointed classrooms. The school roll, attendance statistics an examination results will be monitored as the project progresses.

Funding will not be achieved at sufficient levels to construct all 10 classrooms at the same time. We have dealt with this by breaking the build project into 3 separate phases of activity and by ensuring that we have a broad spectrum of potential donors to contribute to our fundraising. The school will be able to make full use of each classroom block once it has been completed, ensuring that children benefit from the improved learning environments as they become available.

Donors to this project will be kept informed via a combination of quarterly email newsletters plus frequent updates on The Uphill Trust facebook and twitter pages and on The Uphill Trust website.

  • Background

Uphill Junior School was founded in 2011 and serves a poor rural community in western Uganda comprised primarily of subsistence farmers . Many of the families in the area have been affected by HIV/AIDS and there are a large number of orphaned children and single parent families. The school actively encourages the education of girls as well as boys.

The children of Iruhuura will be the primary beneficiaries of the project. Uphill Junior School is open to all children of the community, irrespective of their financial means, and provision of a safe, clean learning environment will enhance the educational opportunities for all the pupils. At the end of Primary 7 the children will sit the Primary Leavers Examination, giving them a national qualification that will allow them to move onto secondary education.
