Magic of Play Appeal

Over 3,000 babies & children are cared for on the Children's Unit at the Lister hospital, Stevenage each year. A 2015 fundraising appeal provided a new Playroom, but now we want to ensure it remains equipped with toys, games & sensory equipment. We also want state-of-the-art medical equipment.

  • Need

    Need

Children & young people are spending long periods of time on the Children's Ward - away from their friends, family members and school. They need to be stimulated and educated and, where possible, mix with their peers. We want to improve the hospital experience for them all - especially those who have suppressed immune systems or are bed-ridden. We want to create as much of a 'home-from-home' environment as we can whilst ensuring they receive the best possible clinical care.

    Solution

The new Playroom provided a state-of-the-art space for children to mix and play in safety. It provides a communal area to encourage mixing, a dedicated area for teenagers, a sensory room and a room for those with reduced immune systems. We have a team of Play Specialists who work with the children to stimulate, educate and entertain.

We now want to take our learnings to extend this play area into the ward and into other areas of the hospital to make them more child-friendly.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To ensure toys, games and equipment are regularly replaced so children have access to the best

    Activities

» Fundraise for the more specialist items and accept donations of 'as new' toys and games

By monitoring the standard and quantity of the equipment available compared to when the Playroom first opened and in line with the number of patients now compared to then

  • Impact

    Impact

Children will have a better and more enjoyable hospital experience which will reduce their stress levels and aid their recovery. We will measure this through feedback from our Play Specialists and from parents/guardians who are best placed to monitor improvements and levels of happiness in their loved ones

    Risk

All play equipment is funded by the Charity so if no funds are raised and no product donations are made, the existing equipment will be damaged, lost and broken and the standard of equipment available will be reduced.

We currently have sufficient charitable funds to maintain a basic level of replacement and are proactively fundraising to purchase new items and increase quantities to accommodate rising patient numbers.

    Reporting

Donors are welcome to visit the Children's Ward (under supervision at all times) to see the difference their support is making first hand. We are also happy to provide written reports including pictures and case studies of children who have benefited from the project
