Hospital transport for seriously ill children

We are seeking funding to support the cost of transporting children with life-threatening or terminal conditions to and from hospital to receive treatment.

Charity information: Rainbow Trust Children's Charity

  • Need

Last year Rainbow Trust provided 7,671 hours of hospital support for up to 1,958 sick children.

Many Rainbow Trust families travel to hospital several times each week, for chemotherapy or other ongoing treatments. These trips can take the whole day and using public transport can expose a sick child to a high risk of infection.

Family Support Workers can transport these families safely to and from hospital in a secure, low risk environment, also giving them time together during treatment.

Demand for hospital transport continues to outstrip supply. Further funding would enable Rainbow Trust to provide more vehicles which can be used by trained volunteers to provide an extra resource for families who need to reach hospital, either regularly or ad hoc.

This project would enable Family Support Workers and Family Support Volunteers to stay with families during treatment, either spending time with a sick child or providing sibling support to brothers and sisters who accompany them.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide extra resources to increase provision of hospital transport and support to sick children.

» We will use publicity channels to raise awareness of this specific need to encourage donations in support of this project.

    What success will look like

The purchase of a new vehicle for Family Support Workers and Family Support Volunteers to enable more transport for Rainbow Families.

  • Impact

We will increase the number of hours that we provide hospital transport and support annually.

More families will benefit directly from our increased capacity to provide this resource and it may enable us to provide support for even more families.

The rising cost of providing transport - for instance fluctuations in petrol prices - could alter the projected annual cost of providing hospital support. This would be combatted by smarter allocation of resources and reduced provision of transport hours if required, although it would enable the provision of transport would remain in place.

We report annually on the hours spent providing hospital transport and support. Regular case studies will be provided to show the range of secondary benefits that this service provides, such as sibling support, emotional support and practical support.

  • Background

Rainbow Trust Children's Charity supports families irrespective of background, religion or financial situation.

We currently support families in 9 geographical areas of England - Cumbria and Lancashire, County Durham, Greater Manchester, Swindon, Southampton, Essex, Surrey, West London and Central London. Our aim is to provide care for families across the UK.

Each Family Support Worker takes care of up to 25 families at any one time. Up to 6 members of each family benefits from hospital transport services, for instance, enabling a parent to stay at home with healthy siblings for important bonding time. Grandparents are given respite from caring for healthy siblings, an anxious parent has someone to support them through an upsetting day or the child receiving treatment has someone to stay with them throughout a long day or dialysis or chemotherapy.
