I Love Summer Fun
This project will provide 90 deprived children aged 18months- 5 years, in Hackney and its neighbouring boroughs, with a 3 week summer playscheme where they will participate in fun and healthy activities otherwise denied to them.
August 2017 - August 2017
Charity information: Happy Kids
Children in these boroughs hardly have the play opportunities required to promote healthy development. 'Many children live in
overcrowded conditions and are denied opportunities to play in a safe, tolerant and fun environment' (Hackney Council 2008). 'out of 49 settings in Hackney, only three provide out of school provision... (Hackney Play Strategy 2007-2012) This lack of play opportunities negatively affects children's development.
At Happy Kids we believe that 'Regular enjoyment of time, space and opportunity to play is fundamental to children's happiness and essential to their healthy development'(Adrian Voce, Director of the Children's Play Council). We have therefore created project I Love Summer Fun so that we can provide play opportunities during summer holidays when play is so important to children and to their parents many of whom carry work related responsibilities in addition to their household responsibilities.
To provide a summer holiday play scheme for 90 children in need of this service
Activities» A 3-week holiday playscheme in the summer running from 9 to 4 daily providing a variety of sports, arts and crafts, creative play sessions and trips.
What success will look like
Success will be 85 children attending play scheme who enjoy high quality provision and benefit from the variety of play opportunities offered showing increased happiness.
To improve the health of the playscheme beneficiaries
Activities» We will provide a variety of outdoor play activities to ensure constant movement as well as daily 20 minute exercise sessions
» We will provide fun healthy snacks and lunches to encourage children that healthy eating is fun and good for you.
What success will look like
Success will be if 75% of beneficiaries (or their parents/carers) indicate in surveys and through behaviours that we have affected the lifestyle choices they make.
Maximum user involvement will increase self-esteem and all activities will be planned to enhance personal as well as social development, ensuring that children grow up with a more positive approach to life. Parents will be approached to feedback on changes in behavior of the children who have attended play scheme so that the impact of the project can be monitored.
There is a risk that we will have higher demand for services than expected. This may mean that we will have to refuse some applications due to a lack of facilities to serve them. Therefore we will institute an admission process where 50% will work on a first-come first-served basis and 50% will be reserved for the most vulnerable and excluded children. We will ask community organisations to refer these children to us. Thus we will ensure inclusion of those difficult to reach.
We will send an e-mail update to donors after the play scheme including photographs, recordings and video diaries of beneficiaries enjoying the play scheme activities so that they can see how far their donations have gone. We will mention donors in our project report and annual report.

The project will take place in the London Borough of Hackney, which has been indicated as the lowest 20% on the Index of Multiple Deprivation. 44%of the local community live in overcrowded accomodation and 58% live on means-tested benefits. Although the crime rate is improving, 66% of parents responding to a recent survey were worried about a member of their family being physically or verbally attacked in the area. The children are not safe playing outside their homes and need a safe playsetting
We are targeting the disadvantaged communities living in Hackney, many of whom are on means-tested benefits. The communities are typically made up of large families with parents juggling multiple career and childcare responsibilities. Summer holidays can thus be isolated, boring chunks of time for these children with no structured activities and little parental involvement. I Love Summer Fun will give parents a reprieve and give children skill-building activities to make them confident and happy
We have been running holiday play schemes in this community since 2009 with an annual increase in beneficiaries of 22%. Our projects were well managed and monitored. There is an ever-increasing demand for more round-the-year projects and play schemes for younger children. We have worked with the Hackney Play Association to design our programmes and continue to consult with parents and children about our activities and projects. We currently have a year-round membership of 280 children.
