Summer Camp 2016

Summer holidays are very expensive and increasingly out of reach for many local children from low income families. We want to take 40 local children on a back to basics camp this summer. The children will get a break from the city and learn valuable life skills!

August 2016 - August 2016

  • Need

Children from low income households and large families cannot afford breaks during the long summer holidays. Our playground is also situated in a very densely populated urban area that is currently being regenerated causing noise, disruption and significant loss of play space. This offers few options for local children to get outdoors during the holidays and whilst our playground is a fantastic resource it is great to have an opportunity to get out of London and back to basics.

Our Summer Camp is a 5 day back to basics experience offering; a break from London and modernity; new life skills including bushcraft; new friends; development of confidence and resilience; fresh healthy meals daily.

Parents and carers are asked to make a very small contribution to secure a space however for families who are unable to the contribution is waived. In this way all children who may benefit are able to request a space on the Summer Camp.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To deliver a 5 day back to basics Summer Camp for 40 local children.

» Book experienced staff to lead the Summer Camp
» Secure the campsite, transport and equipment for the camp
» Advertise the camp, targeting children who are most likely to benefit from the break
» Take the children to Summer Camp for 5 days of fun and adventure!

    What success will look like

We will demonstrate the success of this aim by evidencing the numbers of children attending and by producing a camp report outlining the activities organised on a daily basis.

  • Impact

Long term changes include and increase in the skills, confidence and resilience of the children who attend.

This will be demonstrated through interviews with a sample of five children after the camp as well as interviews with their parents/carers.

Risk 1: Low uptake/ not filling spaces.
Mitigation: We already have children asking about camp this year. Also advertise the opportunity in good time to the 524 children registered with our playground.
    Risk 2: Campsite unavailable.
Mitigation: We have 3 options and have good relationships with each site so are confident that we will be accommodated.
    Risk 3: Accident/ Injury
Mitigation: All staff are qualified play and youth workers and are first aiders. Risk assessments are up to date.

We will take photos, case studies and write a full report for donors at the end of the camp.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We have over 500 local children registered with our adventure playground and have great relationships with their families. Our staff know the children who would benefit most from getting out of the city. In addition, we have been running residential trips since the 1980's so have a lot expertise within the team about how to create magical experiences.
