Summer 2016 tour of LIGHT SHOW

In 2016 Oily Cart plan to tour LIGHT SHOW, a production created specifically for young people aged 3-19 with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) and/or those on the Autistic Spectrum. Help us reach more special schools and venues with this multi-sensory and interactive show!

May 2016 - July 2016

  • Need

    Need

These young people often have few opportunities to access theatre that is appropriate for them. They are often excluded either through physical or attitudinal barriers, or because work is not accessible to them. LIGHT SHOW has been designed specifically for these young people, and our performers utilise methods and techniques that actively involve and engage them.

The demand for our work currently far outstrips our capacity - for every special school that we visit, we have 9 other requests.

    Solution

We are developing successful, non-conventional methods of communication with these young people, many of whom are non-verbal, do not have a high public profile and often have 24 hour care needs. The multi-sensory techniques used in the production can then be used in the everyday interactions between the young people and their carers and teachers. This creates a lasting legacy from the project which will be beneficial for the long-term education of the young people.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To enable as many young people as possible to benefit from seeing a performance of 'LIGHT SHOW'.

    Activities

» To tour LIGHT SHOW to special schools and theatre venues across England during May, June and July 2016.

We will work with London University's Institute of Education to evaluate the project based on feedback collected from parents, carers and teachers following each performance.

  • Impact

    Impact

The multi-sensory techniques used in the production can subsequently be used in the everyday interactions between the young people and their carers and teachers. This will create a lasting legacy from the project which will be beneficial for the long-term education of the young people.

    Risk

Our research has demonstrated that it is beneficial to prepare our young audience before they attend the performance so that they are relaxed, know what to expect and can get the most from the performance. We have created a 'Social Story' for use by parents, carers and teachers at home or school. This social story introduces the characters in the show and explains what will happen in simple and clear language so that the young people are prepared for this new experience beforehand.

    Reporting

All donors will be emailed the Evaluation Report at the culmination of this project.
