Creative Writing Project at WHALEarts
To deliver creative writing activities that engage young people and build skills, self esteem and creativity.
February 2016 - June 2016
Wester Hailes, Edinburgh, an area with a number of challenges: A lack of confidence and low self esteem are common factors experienced by young people in the area. Wester Hailes has one of the lowest levels of young people reaching positive destinations post school in Scotland. The community experiences a combination of factors which can cause strain on family life – higher than average unemployment, high numbers of lone parents and the Wester Hailes area has a score of 5% on the SIMD.
Creative writing – poetry, short stories, life writing – to be developed in partnership with class teachers, in line with CfE and what teachers feel would be most beneficial (and fun!) for young people. Through this we will help rebuild confidence self believe and esteem along with new skills.
To deliver creative writing activities that engage young people of the community.
Activities» Sessions of writing with a tutor, IT training for publishing. The creative writing will be a mix of poetry, short story writing, and life writing.
Their work will be reviewed and published on the IT platform Digital Sentinel. They will demonstrate the ability to express themselves.
Increased skills amongst young people including group discussion/work; expressing themselves clearly, listening, sharing, creative skills and confidence. Provide written work for exam portfolio of writing. Work shared with the community on the Digital Sentinel. Legacy of IT skills and the opportunity to be community reporters for the Digital Sentinel.
Take Up Rate. We decided to work with the local school, so the participants will be coming during their class-time. The project team think this is the best way to make sure we have a really high take-up rate: often children and young people lack the confidence to sign up for a session by themselves, or simply may not hear about it. Once they come along, we're confident they will enjoy it.
The initial report back will be the work published on the Digital Sentinel. There will updates and links via the Trust's Newsletter, occasional email drop and Twitter/Facebook/The Big Give feeds. And directly if we have contact details.

The young people of the community. If we can make this a success then we can make the project bigger and maybe even diversify into the wider field of the arts.
Kiran's Trust has been supporting young people in the Arts, Music, Writing and Sports for six years. Our ethos is in memory of 18 year old Kiran Martin, who's passions are our charitable purposes.
