Counselling for young people in West Berkshire
We are looking for funds to enable us to run our core service at our Newbury town centre location, which enables us to help over 200 young people between the ages of 11 and 25 each year. With our team of volunteer counsellors, we offer an early intervention service to 46 young people each week.
The project is ongoing
Charity information: Time to Talk West Berkshire
50% of lifetime mental health illnesses emerge before the age of 14, with 75% emerging before 25. 10% of children and young people have a clinically diagnosable mental problem yet 70% of children and adolescents who experience mental health problems have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age. We aim to help these young people early, reducing the need for further professional intervention, helping build self-confidence, encourage relationships and increase life choices.
What we do is proven to work. We collect Clinical Outcomes in Routine Improvement scores - monitoring changes in levels of client mental health through the counselling process. CORE score is between 0 -40, with 40 being the greatest level of distress. The average CORE score of young people coming to see us for counselling for the first time is 20.4, equating to “moderate severe” psychological distress. Over time of counselling, this reduces to 12.9, to a category of "mild" distress.
Help over 200 young people in the coming year
Activities» Maintain a minimum of 25 counsellors offering 46 sessions per week, ensuring they all feel fully supported
» Manage waiting list to ensure assessment session offered within 2 weeks and regular sessions offered within 8 weeks of contact
» Clinical Lead to ensure quality of service and levels of CORE score reduction maintained
» To maintain links with other local organisations, and ensure all are aware of our services
What success will look like
Operational statistics in terms of numbers of young people referred, number of sessions offered, CORE scores monitored.
Our vision is: A West Berkshire where all young people feel empowered and have the same opportunity to reach their full potential and grow up to be actively engaged in society as happy, confident and achieving adults.
The main risks are financial. The organisation has been running for 30 years, and we have experienced staff and counsellors, and streamlined systems and policies to offer the service. We make every effort to raise core funds through ongoing grant applications and fundraising opportunities.
We collect statistics regarding numbers of young people coming to see us, their presenting issues, CORE scores etc, and have experience in reporting back to donors both small and large. We are happy to report back to donors in the most appropriate way.

We are the only organisation offering free at the point of delivery counselling to under 18's, and we have been doing so for 30 years. 48% of our referrals come from GP's and CAMHS, and 25% from other local organisations. The number of referrals we receive continues to increase, and has doubled in the last 2 years. Our waiting list averages 38 young people at any one time, and we get an average of 24 new referrals each month.
