Our plan is to provide daily hot nutritious meals to frail and elderly people who cannot shop or cook for themselves. These meals will be prepared, cooked, packed and delivered to their homes by our team of 175 devoted, trained and experienced volunteers, keeping users safe and in their own homes.
December 2016 - November 2017
Hot Line Meals Service (London)
There are a large & growing number of frail and older people living at home. With ongoing welfare & increasing cuts, it is becoming more difficult for them to stay safe & well in their own homes. They no longer have the strength to do their own shopping, cooking or clearing up & they are on low fixed incomes. Consequently, they cannot cook meals for themselves & would live on unhealthy convenience food or less & less food & rapidly become unwell & be at risk of having to move into a care home.
Our project Magnanimous Meals will solve the problem by organising our willing band of 175 volunteers to prepare, cook, pack and deliver individual meals to the frail and elderly people we have described. As well as the meal, the human contact provided by our delivering volunteers is an important social and welfare benefit, making sure all is well, and that users are able to unpack and access the meals, thus safeguarding their health, wellbeing and independence at home for as long as possible.
To provide 75 frail and elderly people with a daily hot nutritious, freshly cooked meal.
Activities» Our loyal band of volunteers will prepare, cook, and pack the meals, and deliver them still warm to the elderly users.
Success will be that the 75 frail and elderly participants will stay healthy and well, and not be admitted to hospital or need to move into a care home.
Combat social isolation of elderly, whose frailty act as a barrier, cutting off from social contact.
Activities» The friendly volunteer will deliver the meal with a friendly smile, asking them about their day and helping them access the meal.
Success will be measured according to how much the elderly communicate with the volunteers.
Frail and elderly people, as they age and become more frail, will remain healthy in body and spirit and be enabled to stay in their own homes rather than go into care, or even be admitted to hospital.
We will demonstrate the success of the project by evaluating questionnaires that we will distribute to users and their families.
There is the risk that Hot Line Meals Service will not be not have enough volunteers to prepare, cook, and deliver the meals. This risk is low, as we have a bank of 175 volunteers to call on, and this service has been running since 1997.
We will send donors a report on our activities annually, with full details of our projects and their outcomes, and include with it our Annual Report and Accounts.

Our project will be located in the London Borough of Hackney. This is an inner city Borough at the bottom end of the indices of multiples deprivation, scoring 2nd most deprived borough in London.
We are targeting this project at frail and elderly people on low fixed income, unable to make ends meet. They are too frail to be able to shop, cook or prepare meals for themselves, and LA cutbacks mean that there is no Meals on the Wheels Service available for them.
Hot Line Meals Service is best placed to provide this project as it is well known and well loved in the community. It has the facilities in place to enable it to run the project:
1) Our purpose built commercial kitchen
2) Our bank of willing, capable and enthusiastic volunteer for all aspects of the project.
