Frisson Primary School Glee Challenge

To 'get Scotland's Children Singing' by 2020. Song and dance are the most natural and accessible forms of expression available and when harnessed provides significant learning benefits. Our Glee Challenge realises these benefits, fostering confidence, discipline, teamwork, pride and aspiration.

  • Need


    An education in music and the arts builds self-esteem, improves behaviour and social skills, and increases broader academic achievement. These are opportunities that should be available to everyone. Yet equality of opportunity and access to music making appears to be an issue for a large number of children and access for many is dependent upon their parents ability to pay. Our Challenge seeks to use song and dance which are the most accessible forms of music making to tackle this problem.


    Our Primary School Show Choir (Glee) challenge solves the problem by providing opportunity and support to children and their teachers/volunteers/staff. It does so by providing a series of headline performance opportunities (heats/finals) supported by three pillars of choir focused (workshops), continuous professional development workshops for show choir staff and the development of support materials. All of which are provided free to children and the schools.

    To help all children realise their full potential


    » Providing performance opportunities in professional theatres in Scotland in the form of Challenge heats and Challenge finals. (18 events)
    » To support children by providing show choir workshops (85) covering vocal, dance and performance supported and delivered by professional tutors

    What success will look like

    1. Successful staging of 18 heats, 7 area finals and the first Scottish final.
    2. working with 85 school and providing 85 workshops
    3. Evaluation of these activities

    To help children and their schools engage with their community


    » Providing performance opportunities, Challenge heats and finals, in professional theatres involving the local community and stakeholders. (18 events)

    What success will look like

    Successful staging of 18 heats, 7 area finals and the first Scottish final with expected audience figures of 8500. Engagement with local groups/companies in running/funding these

    Aim 3

    To create a sustainable charity delivering permanent benefits


    » To support the children through show choir workshops (85) designed to build their skills and therefore their confidence, team work and motivation
    » To support choir staff through workshop to develop their skills and knowledge in order to create a sustainable model for future years
    » To provide a bank of resources and materials designed to support staff as they work with children.

    What success will look like

    1. Successful staging of heats, 7 area finals, and Scottish final
    2. working with 85 school/providing 85 workshops
    3. development of support workshops/materials for choir staff

  • Impact


    The project will assist children long term by increasing attainment, improving behaviour, developing confidence and motivation as well as building links between the schools and their wider communities.
    Success will continued to be measured through our impact research working closely with schools to measure changes e.g. increase in choir numbers, improved behaviour, parental engagement.


    In 2017 we will be working with 85 school show choirs our biggest group yet. More events, workshops does increase the risks e.g. venue hires, funding and schools withdrawing.

    Our experience over the last few years shows that we have the knowledge and partnerships to deliver successfully. In 2016 we delivered 14 events involving 56 schools and have the team, knowledge and skills to ensure that the project runs well.


    Donors to this project will receive a monthly email reports and regular updates via social media i.e. facebook and twitter.

  • Background


    The workshops/events will engage an estimated 3000 children across
    Perth & Kinross and
    from January to June


    Primary school children ages 5 - 11, an estimated 3000 children, their schools and their chool communities. The children and schools are drawn from across seven regions which represent a range of areas e.g. rural and urban. The 85 schools are drawn from a range of areas some recognised as areas of multiple deprivation and where appropriate additional support will be provided to these

    Why Us?

    We are best placed to respond due to the experience, capability and capacity built over the last five years. Under the stewardship of its founder, Linda Breckenridge, the Frisson Foundation has grown from a small fundraising idea to an incorporated charity providing real music making opportunities to children across Scotland. Growth has been managed allowing the development of a team of professionals and a network of expertise that to date has engaged with 100 schools over the last 5 years
