Building Chances

Our Building Chances development programme will create new supported housing for homeless and vulnerable people in the Surrey area. The programme has already created 31 new homes, with a further 17 currently in development. It will allow us to support more and more vulnerable people each year.

  • Need

    Need

There is a desperate shortage of affordable housing in Surrey. This means that vulnerable people struggle to find accommodation suited to their needs. When crisis hits, they may end up in temporary accommodation, sleeping on friends’ sofas, or even becoming street homeless. This puts them at risk of further harm and can exacerbate existing problems such as mental health issues, drug or alcohol use and offending. Once in this situation, it can be very hard to escape without the right support.

    Solution

We are creating high quality supported housing that will give people a place to call home. We give people a secure place to live, where they can feel safe, creating a stable base from which they can improve other aspects of their lives. We will help more people to access the support they need to turn their lives around. Each person living in the new properties will have a dedicated keyworker, who will provide one-to-one specialist support.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To create more units of affordable housing to help vulnerable people across the Surrey area.

    Activities

» Build and renovate numerous properties across the area to meet the local need for affordable housing as identified by local partners.

We will have significantly increased the provision of affordable and supported housing across the areas in which we work.

  • Impact

    Impact

Building Chances will have benefits not just for the individual people who live at the properties, but also for the community as a whole. By supporting people to overcome issues such as drug/alcohol dependency, homelessness, or offending behaviour, we will reduce the potential for antisocial behaviour and crime within the communities where we work. We also support people affected by disability or illness to manage their condition, in turn reducing the impact on health and social care budgets.

    Risk

We work closely with local authorities, statutory agencies and charities to identify where new provision is needed and develop projects to meet this need.

    Reporting

We will be pleased to provide regular project updates on the progress of the Building Chances campaign, with funding updates and the progress of works on buildings. Our Annual Review also features stories of people who have benefitted from the project so far.
