Arkwright House redevelopment

This major capital project to redevelop our head office, will not only improve the offices for staff, volunteers and visitors and provide a stimulating and pleasant environment but also provide spaces for meetings and training courses and the opportunity to celebrate the heritage of the building

The works will take in the region of 9 to 12 months once the funds have been raised

  • Need


    The building has been poor accessibility throughout and the welfare facilities for staff and volunteers are no longer appropriate for modern life. This prevents the building from being used to its maximum and is both costly to run and space inefficient. We are no longer able to let out our meeting rooms and promote the building's historical significance due to access and space constraints and


    The new design will allow access throughout all three floors, provide an improved heat management system and offer significantly improved facilities for staff, volunteers and visitors. Office and meeting rooms will be improved along with the provision of training and promotional areas which can be opened to the public. The building will be accessible at times to the public to showcase the historical importance of Sir Richard Arkwright and his life in Preston.

    To improve the building to enable improved facilities and use for staff, volunteers and visitors


    » Redevelop the layout of the building will provide fully accessible areas throughout the building along with appropriate welfare facilities
    » Redesign of the layout will provide more useable office space alongside training and meeting facilities which will include improved digital resources

    Positive feedback from staff, volunteers and visitors.
    Increased number of staff, volunteers and visitors with disabilities accessing the entire building

    To reduce future running costs of the building


    » By improving the heating and lighting systems and usage of the building, costs will be reduced
    » Accessible meeting and training facilities will be provided which can be hired commercially.

  • Impact


    The building will become sustainable for use as a working building for the future, demonstrated by continued occupation and increased use.


    That funds cannot be secured to meet the development costs.

    A major fundraising campaign for capital funds has been launched


    Regular updates on progress with raising funds and then with the impact of the work on the services offered by Age Concern Central Lancashire and the long term sustainability of the building
