National Youth Theatre: discovering epic talent

NYT will be 60 in 2016. We will celebrate our history of identifying and nurturing the potential of those who have gone on to excel in theatre, film, TV and the wider creative industries, as well as in other endeavours, becoming great lawyers, journalists, doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs and CEOs.

  • Need


    We are planning now for 2016 and beyond. We need to ensure a strong infrastructure for the organisation now so we can deliver:
    • Auditions to find the best of young British talent
    • Skills development courses and talent development initiatives to nurture and train this talent
    • Innovative productions to showcase this talent to a wide audience . . .
    • And that give employment and volunteering opportunities to emerging young creative and technical theatre professionals


    Investing in NYT now will ensure the quality of our programme in 2016 and beyond. We believe that the best way for young people to learn is by doing – by engaging with leading artists and industry professionals. Your support will enable us to plan incredible opportunities and to work with brilliant creative professionals – writers, directors, designers, choreographers, musicians and technical and production staff.

    » Auditioning 5,000 young people aged 14-25 from all over the UK for the 700 places on our summer courses in performance and technical theatre

    700 young people having a brilliant time in summer 2016 on our courses in performance and technical theatre.

    » Employing a core team led by CEO and Artistic Director Paul Roseby
    » Planning a vibrant programme of courses, productions and projects for 2016 and beyond
    » Providing amazing opportunities for our members to get involved in external casting auditions and free or discounted workshops, Q&As and ticket deals

    Productions that our members want to take part in; that sell strongly to our audience; and that are well-reviewed in national and international media.

    We’ll champion talent, providing alternative pathways into training and employment


    » Continuing to deliver Playing Up, our free accredited drama course for young people who are NEET (not in education, training or employment)
    » Planning for The NYT REP Company in 2016, our free practical training for our most talented members, offering an alternative to drama school
    » Continuing to offer training opportunities for our members through NYT Creative Pathways to enable them to volunteer or work for us

    What success will look like

    Young people being employed in our industry as performers, directors, writers, designers, facilitators and as part of production crews.

  • Impact


    NYT alumni excel across the creative industries. We’re proud of recent Oscar winners Helen Mirren and Colin Firth and nominees Rosamund Pike and Chiwetel Ojiofor. Lolita Chakrabarti was Most Promising Playwright at the 2012 Evening Standard Theatre Awards. Luke Treadaway won the 2013 Olivier Award for Best Actor. Barrie Rutter set up Northern Broadsides to bring audiences “Northern voices, doing classical work in non-velvet spaces”. Matthew Warchus is the new artistic director at The Old Vic.


    NYT is an ambitious organisation with thousands of young members across the UK. We want to give opportunities to as many of these young people to take part in our work in 2016. We are planning a programme of diverse activity with opportunities on stage, on film and online, in spaces and places around the country.


    Our donors will be part of the first group to be told about our 2016 60th anniversary season. We will keep them informed about the productions and courses, and let them know about the young people who are part of them. We’ll report on the success of 2016 at the end of the year.

    NYT has given young people the opportunity to participate in productions and projects at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics; on stage at the Ambassadors Theatre in the heart of London’s West End; at the Arcola Theatre, Sheffield Theatres, Bristol Old Vic and West Yorkshire Playhouse; on the Edinburgh Fringe and down in The Old Vic Tunnels; at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow; and in outdoor spectacles at Latitude Festival, Battersea Power Station and Sheffield’s Park Hill Estate.


    NYT empowers the most talented young people from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We reach out to those with no life-line, no confidence and no hope – and to those who believe they are sitting in a world of opportunity, encouraging them to go beyond their perceived comfort zone. The result is a creative powerhouse celebrating the nation’s diversity and ever-evolving cultural heritage and producing the most relevant work on offer for young people today.
