  • Need

Many men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender (TG) living in Nepal are HIV positive but face problems in accessing proper health care services. Stigma and misconceptions surrounding the MSM and TG community affect the quality of care received at medical institutions; there is lack of confidentiality, mistreatment by medical staff and sometimes even a denial of services. There is also a need for support groups and counselling support to help live with the stigma and prejudice they face.

    1) To ensure professional health care providers including doctors treat MSM/TG PLHIV in the far-West development region.

    2) To provide regular medical care and support to ensure the life-saving antiretroviral (ARV) treatment is effective amongst MSM/TG living with HIV

    3) To provide other logistical, morale and political support for MSM/TG living with HIV so that their access to care and treatment is ensured.

    4) To enable support and enpowement groups and provide counselling support.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Provide regular health care, monitoring and treatment of infections for MSM/TG living with HIV.

» Provide a weekly doctor's surgery and full-time nurse for the far-West Blue Diamond Society drop-in centre.
» Provide medicines for HIV opportunistic co-infections such as for CMV and Cryptococcal Meningitis
» Provide transportation support for MSM/TG living with HIV who otherwise couldn't afford transport costs to see the doctor

    What success will look like

At least 1000 MSM/TG living with HIV will receive regular care and treatment per year and many lives will be saved through treatment of opportunistic infections.

    Aim 2

Enable support groups, counselling support and empowerment groups

» The care giver will provide HIV peer-to-peer counselling and support.
» The care giver will initiate HIV support and empowerment groups.

    What success will look like

The fear and stigma will be reduced for this group of vulnerable people, and they can take pride in who and what they are.

  • Impact

Hundreds of people's health and quality of llfe will be improved and many people's lives will be saved.

There is a risk that the project might not be effectively implemented. We have teamed up with Blue Diamond Society - which is a very well-respected LGBT organisation to implement the project. We will also be visitng the project frequently to check on progress and meet patients.

Aids Ark reports to donors twice yearly through newsletters and at our events.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

Aidsark has been providing medical treatments since 2002 to people with HIV who would otherwise not receive treatment (in countries including Lesotho, South Africa, Uganda, India and Burma). We have a simple, secure, effective and tested system in place. 100% of money raised will be used to fund the treatment of HIV - the cost of all overheads are fully covered by the 2 Founder Trustees (Jeremy Norman & Derek Frost)
