  • Need

Nutcracker! The Musical is an inclusive production which can reach and serve all audiences over the festive period. The production will encourage participation in the theatre from young audiences, offering valuable educational opportunities to young people. Families from low-income backgrounds will be assisted in attending the performance through a subsidised ticket programme. We will also provide opportunities to theatregoers with Autism and learning difficulties.

Through the provision of workshops and education packs we will be able to leave lasting impressions on attending schoolchildren. Our Theatre for Hospitals initiative will make an incredibly positive difference on children in hospital. Those suffering from autism and other learning difficulties can attend a relaxed performance.

We have kept our ticket prices low so that the show is affordable to all, and are partnering with Mousetrap Theatre Projects so that low-income families can attend.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To create a big ambitious new musical as a young company.

» Foster emerging talent from across the industry, giving opportunities to a wide range of artists and other theatre professionals.
» Stage 30 performances of Nutcracker! The Musical.

    What success will look like

The success of the show and quality of relationships will be determined through conversation with partners, reviews, and audience feedback.

    Aim 2

Ensure our production offers opportunities to those groups with limited access to the arts.

» Our Theatre in Hospitals Initiative will bring a narrated concert of songs from the show to London area hospitals for pediatric patients and families.
» A subsidised ticket programme in partnership with Mousetrap Theatre Projects will help families from low-income backgrounds attend the theatre.
» In collaboration with Include Arts we will create a relaxed performance suitable for theatregoers with autism and learning disabilities.

    What success will look like

We use a questionnaire based on the August scale to provide quantitative data on hospitals performances. Audience uptake will determine success of the other initiatives.

    Aim 3

To inspire young people to participate and attend the arts

» Creating an education pack which will be sent to any schools and youth groups attending a performance.
» Offering educational workshops for students at Key Stages 2, 3, and 4 focusing on academic issues raised in and by the production.
» We are looking to partner with an area children's drama school to allow their students firsthand experience of professional theatrical production.

    What success will look like

We will solicit feedback from audience members, classroom teachers, and young participants.

  • Impact

We hope that the publicity gained through Nutcracker! the Musical will enable continued performances as a part of our Theatre in Hospitals Initiative, allowing us to forge a year-round, international programme of entertainment and diversion for sick children. We see this year's production as a jumping off point for the show as a property and envision it moving next Christmas to a larger regional theatre or even to the West End.

The Festive Season is one of the most popular for those attending family theatre. We have deliberately kept our prices low and are working hard with one of the leading theatre marketing companies to ensure this production is seen by a large number of people.

There is a risk that one of the artists working on the project could pull out. We have a very experienced team leading the project who will ensure that the best possible relationships between all team members are fostered and maintained.

Funders of the project will receive a weekly email newsletter discussing the piece, its progress, highlighting positive engagement stories, comments and reviews, and featuring backstage pictures.

  • Background

The main activities of the project, the production and accompanying educational workshops, will take place at the Pleasance in Islington, London. We will be reaching out to schools and families in the local area including Camden, Islington, Haringey and Hackney. Hackney and Harringey are two of London's poorest boroughs.

Our Theatre for Hospitals initiative will take a concert of songs into hospitals across London including the esteemed Guy's and St Thomas'.

The Pleasance has a strong history of attracting strong family and school audiences.

Through our partnership with Mousetrap Theatre Projects we will be reaching out to children and families from low-income backgrounds and our collaboration with Include Arts will ensure we reach out to theatregoers with autism and learning difficulties.

The Theatre for Hospitals project will ensure we also reach those children with the least access to the arts and give them an uplifting experience.
