Extra Mile for Christmas

The project is to secure 100,00 miles of patient transport journeys. This is to keep up with predicted future demand. We have over 45 volunteers who use their own cars to take cancer patients to their treatment appointments, we do approximately 1500 lifesaving journeys a month.

The project is needs led - as long as people keep getting cancer diagnoses, we’ll keep providing our free services.

  • Need

The project aims is to provide people living with cancer reassurance that they will be able to attend their cancer treatments appointments. Without our transport services many people would go without, especially older people, those living on their own, or people in rural areas. It really is a lifeline to patients and it takes away part of their worry and concern around attending appointments. We do everything for them and pick them up from their front door, wait, and take them home again.

There are more & more people each month being diagnosed with cancer in Ayrshire, and it will continue to grow exponentially. This project would ensure we can continue to deliver our patient transport service for another 100,000 miles. This is a vital free service that we supply.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To continue providing our free patient transport services to people living with cancer.

» By securing funding to continue offering this vital service for free.

    What success will look like

The success of this will be the amount of people we provide with transport to and from their hospital appointments, at no charge, relieving any stresses they may have.

  • Impact

At present the need for our transport services is increasing on a weekly basis. By completing this project it will enable us to offer more of the services to those who need this kind of support.

There are no risks associated with this project.

We will report to donors at the end when we able to report how many miles of journeys we have secured.

  • Background

Our transport service covers the whole of Ayrshire, a size of approx. 1,129 sq.miles. We collect people from their homes and take them to one of three hospitals, the furthest one in Glasgow.

Cancer very often has a domino affect on those around the patient. By offering our transport services it reassures the patient, and their family, that they will be able to make all of their appointments. Sometimes due to work commitments family members may feel guilty for not being able to offer help - once they receive their treatment schedule, our patient transport services ease that anxiety as we schedule & organise everything for them.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We are the only charity that provides all the services we do. Others in the area may provide one or more of the services but we provide all the support for the journey that a cancer patient has to travel along.
