  • Need

    Need

Too many people are suffering because they are too hard to reach.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, ongoing conflict has now displaced over 400,000 people. Deadly diseases like cholera, malaria and measles are playing out against a background of chronic underdevelopment. Many isolated communities are only accessible on foot due to weak bridges and impassable roads - some communities have received no assistance for 13 years. Isolated communities and their urgent needs risk being forgotten.

    Solution

Medair is providing free access to vital health services for displaced populations, responding to disease outbreaks, constructing bridges and re-opening roads for improved humanitarian access to the most vulnerable people.

Medair brings life-saving relief to the hardest to reach people, wherever they live, whatever it takes.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To bring life-saving relief to the hardest to reach people, wherever they live, whatever it takes.

    Activities

» Medair will provide free access to vital health services for displaced populations, respond to disease outbreaks, and construct bridges and roads.

By saving lives amongst vulnerable, displaced populations, opening up access to health services for isolated communities and rehabilitating infrastructure.

  • Impact

    Impact

Improved road access to isolated communities, improved healthcare access for the most vulnerable people, and education on dealing with disease outbreaks. Saved lives.
This will be demonstrated by improved healthcare and sanitation facilities, new bridges and re-opened roads.

    Risk

    - Repeated outbreaks of infectious diseases
    - Renewed conflict
We have a risk mitigation strategy in place which details our response in the event of an outbreak of infectious diseases such as cholera, malaria or measles. We also have a security management plan. All staff are trained and made aware of this security management plan, which details protocols and procedures to be followed in the event of a security incident.

    Reporting

We will ensure that donors receive detailed financial and project outcome reports.

  • Background

    Location

The project is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, primarily amongst isolated and high risk communities in Province Orientale and Nord Kivu.
The Nord Kivu region has been hit hardest due to persistent insecurity. Masisi, Walikale and Nyiragongo remain the most neglected territories, with over 44,000 IDPs. These displaced populations face increased risk of disease outbreaks due to lack of access to health and sanitation facilities.

    Beneficiaries

    - Isolated communities of displaced people at risk of infectious disease outbreaks and without access to healthcare in Nord Kivu and Province Orientale, DRC.
    - The wider area will benefit in the long term from rehabilitated infrastructure (roads and bridges)
