  • Need

    Need

As highlighted by several media reports, tooth decay is the most common oral disease affecting children and young people in the UK, yet it is largely preventable. Although oral health of children has been improving, significant inequalities remain. Poor oral health can affect children’s ability to sleep, eat, speak, play & socialise. Other impacts include pain, infections, poor diet and impaired nutrition and growth. Large numbers of young children have teeth extracted under general anaesthesia

    Solution

A wild smile promotes healthy habits in a fun and engaging way for young children. The free resources encourage the use of simple preventative measures to look after their children’s oral and general health, following the evidence based guidelines set out by NHS England in Delivering Better Oral Health. Wild Smile will provide a toothbrush, toothpaste and wild smile passport. Using a reward based programme to encourage daily brushing routines, healthy eating and regular visits to the dentist.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Invite 24 dental practices/groups to run a wild smile club

    Activities

» Invitation letters to our database contacts and connections in dentistry
    » Social media campaign
    » Targeted newsletters
    » Trustee letter of appeal

The practices will be signed up to our programme and order 250 wild smile club packs

    Aim 2

Target 250 wild smile memberships per dental practice/group

    Activities

» Provide resource and support practices to target 250 children with in their practice group.

We will monitor how many packs practices have handed out to children to make sure we are on target

    Aim 3

Promote oral health education to 6,000 children across the UK

    Activities

» By getting the 24 practice groups involved to target children on their database and in local schools we will reach this total within 2 years

Stickers sold to practice will indicate sucess of the passport.
Target 3,000 wild smile medals in the first 2 years. Once 9 stickers have been collected a medal is rewarded

    Aim 4

Engage with at least 24 schools via the dental groups involved

    Activities

» Each practice will be asked to pledge at least 1 school visit in their area to deliver a Better oral health workshop/presentation

We will ask the practices to give us a report that we can use in our newsletter/blog once they have completed a school visit

  • Impact

    Impact

This project will help dental teams make a positive impact on children’s oral health through promotion and education. The reward system will encourage regular visit and healthy habits. The website that accompanies the Wild Smile club will continue to offer free resources to practices to encourage further community engagement and a sustainable education programme that can be continued by the educators.

    Risk

The risk is that practices do not buy into the Wild Smile club. However we have very close connections within the dental industry and profession through our trustees and committee members. There are specific dental groups which we can rely to support this project whose involvement will have a positive impact on other dental professionals to get involved.

    Reporting

Donors to this project will receive a quarterly report detailing the progress of practice sign ups and any necessary changes that has been made to the project plans.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We have excellent connections in the dental profession, the dental industry and a large network through UK Dental Schools. We already have the support from groups such as British Society of Dental Hygienist and Therapists, British Dental Health Foundation and Association of Dental Administrators Practice Managers. These groups are sharing our resources via their own social media channels and networking groups; with their help we have a much wider reach.
