Sport for People with Paralysis
Sportability arranges sport for people with paralysis - spinal cord injury, stroke and MS etc. Last year saw 69 events in 12 regions of the UK with over 800 free places. Now we want to take that thro' the winter months with indoor skydiving, shooting,10-pin bowling and archery. Help us change lives.
November 2015 - April 2016
Charity information: Sportability
It is accepted that, apart from the fitness benfits, sport is important to a quality of life. For the person with disabilities this is even more relevant. With problems of access and availability plus the concern over acceptance and ability the barriers to participation for the person with paralysis are immense.
Sportability arranges sport exclusively for people with paralysis. This experience helps to rebuild confidence, restore self-esteem and re-assess their capabilities, which carries through to everyday living. It is not just access to activities, but the social mix, the acceptance and sense of achievement that are empowering. Our goal is to put the “buzz” back into their lives, experience the elusive adrenaline rush and ultimately to inspire the thought “If I can do this, what else can I achieve?”
To provide a winter programme of sport around the UK to complement our successful summer programmes.
Activities» After a pilot programme in 2014 we know we can provide activities that will get people out of their wheelchairs and off their crutches and into sport.
What success will look like
A schedule of events and listings of all participants around the projected 7 regions of the UK.
We have seen many of our participants go on to compete in sport at very high levels. But, as our testimonials show, virtually every participant enjoys a boost to self-confidence, self-esteem and general well-being. Many return year on year and some travel hundreds of miles to participate in different events.
Their is risk assessment for every event we offer. Sportability only works with established organisations and individuals as Service Providers, who are suitably qualified to carry out the activities.
Report back to donors is first expressed by the very fact that a programme exists. Thereafter we will happily provide feedback, photos and testimonials from the participating members.

People with paralysis- typically people with spinal cord injury, stroke, M.S. and other paralysing conditions.
We have been providing sport for people with paralysis for over 25 years. However this has focussed on the availability of sport in the Spring/Summer period. This project seeks to extend that opportunity throughout the year.
