Need
Need
There is a lack of opportunities for emerging choreographers to focus on creating new work.
Where opportunities do exist there is often a financial barrier faced by aspiring choreographers due to the need for unpaid time off work, the cost of space hire and the cost, availability and quality of dancers. Also, there are few chances to develop the skills necessary to create work for large stages.
There is also a lack of feedback by industry experts to support and mentor burgeoning choreographers.Solution
Rambert will support the artistic growth of emerging choreographers by providing the use of our facilities, dancers and support network with no cost to the young choreographers.
Rambert has a proven track record of developing choreographic talent in-house and will expand this by inviting young choreographers from outside the company too.
Feedback from aspiring choreographers has highlighted the importance of mentoring and so several sessions to support their work will be provided throughout the year. -
Aims
Aim 1
Select diverse, emerging choreographers who may not otherwise have the chance to hone their skills.
Activities
» April: Call for applicants to both internal and external candidates
» April: Candidates present to a panel of leading figures from the dance sector
Success will be the creation of a diverse group of talented, ambitious artists equipped with a variety of dance styles who will take part in the project.
Aim 2
Nurture the talent and facilitate the creative process of the selected choreographers.
Activities
» May-November: Group and 1-2-1 mentoring sessions with Peggy Olislaegers, Rambert's Artistic Associate
» May-November: Master-classes with guest teachers
» May-November: Dedicated studio time to create work with Rambert dancers
Success will be choreographers who are free to develop ideas and experiment in a safe, nurturing environment with constructive feedback sessions.
Aim 3
Enable the debut of the next generation of talented and ambitious contemporary choreographers.
Activities
» Work in progress sharing event at Rambert
» Two performances at Rambert’s studio in December
» Post-performance feedback session facilitated by Peggy Olislaegers
Rambert will offer a constructive challenge; before an invited audience, choreographers will at once showcase their work and learn how to deal with the public’s response.

Impact
Impact
Our goal is to develop a generation of diverse choreographers who are ambitious, confident and able to make work for large scale spaces and collaborate with other art forms.
Rambert will achieve this by providing resources to support research, development and creation.
Success will be demonstrated by whether emerging choreographers eventually receive commissions by Rambert or other companies.Risk
This project is dependent on funding secured via the Big Give.
Rambert successfully ran Big Give campaigns in the past. There is a strong campaign strategy to be implemented by skilful development and marketing teams who will make use of learnings from previous years.
Rambert can count on a pool of donors who have supported its Big Give appeals in the past. Conversations with pledgers have already started.Reporting
Donors will receive numerous updates on the project, through personal letters, updates on social media and through invitations to access rehearsals and see choreographic development in progress. We will also offer donors the opportunity to attend the final sharing event.

Background
Location
The choreographic development programme will take place at Rambert’s new headquarters on London’s South Bank (99 Upper Ground, SE1). This area hosts world class cultural organisations putting Rambert in a strategic position to interact with likeminded organisations.
London is an epicentre of creativity. Rambert’s location is therefore vital in ensuring choreographers linked to the company are exposed to the greatest possible access to opportunities.Beneficiaries
The direct beneficiaries are the choreographers.
By being allowed a period of artistic investment in which to create new works, the participants will contribute to contemporary dance as an art form. The continued investment in creation of new work helps establish Rambert as a centre for excellence in choreography.
In addition, new choreography is vital to allow dance to continue to develop and innovate, ultimately benefitting the audiences who pay to see their work. -
