Bus for Breaks

CHICKS provides free respite breaks for disadvantaged children. A CHICKS break allows them to make precious childhood memories, have fun and make friends. With the opening of our third retreat, we need a new minibus to make more breaks possible.

Ongoing from 2016

  • Need

A CHICKS break supports children that are disadvantaged in some way. The reasons children attend a CHICKS break are varied - they could be living in poverty, be young carers or are victims of or witnesses to abuse. Our breaks allow children the chance to make happy childhood memories, have fun with new friends and experience a break from their home lives. Unfortunately, demand for our services continues to grow and we currently have to turn children away.

CHICKS breaks allow children to be children again, giving them much needed respite from troubles at home and the chance to experience childhood activities that many people take for granted. Our newest retreat in Derbyshire will allow us to help hundreds more children each year, and make it easier for children in the North of the UK to attend. Minibuses are crucial equipment for us, allowing us to pick up the children and take them out on exciting adventures!

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To provide hundreds more disadvantaged children each year with a respite break

» Running breaks throughout 2016 at our new Derbyshire Retreat will allow for more children to experience a much needed respite break
» Work with referral agents across the UK to ensure the children who need a break most are able to attend our retreats
» The minibus will be used to collect children from pick-up points and take them to the retreat - without it, we can't get them there!

    What success will look like

Success will be providing 400 children with a respite break at our new Daleside retreat in 2016.

    Aim 2

To enable the children to have fun, experience new things and make special childhood memories

» The minibus means we can take groups out on trips to go swimming, climbing, horse riding and much more
» Our respite break leaders and volunteers work hard to ensure every child has fun by planning activity filled week long breaks

    What success will look like

Each child fills in a questionnaire about their time at CHICKS, so we can assess how well it went, and referral agents complete questionnaires to determine the impact of the break.

  • Impact

The long term impact of a CHICKS break on most children is increased self-esteem and confidence, a greater ability to make friends and increased willingness to try new activities. Other benefits noted included improved family relations, improved trust, increased school attendance and improved behaviour in school. This is measured by questioning referral agents about the change that they see in the children.

There are always risks with transporting and providing breaks for groups of children, but our Respite Break Leaders go through intense training on a yearly basis to ensure they can mitigate any risks involved, including minibus driver training.

Donors are kept informed via our twice yearly magazines with updates about the children, videos which we publish to our social media sites and our website which is updated with news stories regularly.

  • Background

The new retreat is located in the Derbyshire countryside in the East Midlands. This will enable us to take in more children from the Midlands and the North of the UK as they will have less far to travel. This allows us to help more children living in deprived areas, as 9 out of 10 of the most deprived areas in the UK are located in the North of England.

Disadvantaged children aged between 8 and 15, from all across the UK will benefit from the new retreat. It will make it easier for children in the Midlands and the North of the UK to attend a CHICKS break.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

CHICKS has been running respite breaks for children since 1992. We have experience in providing unforgettable breaks for disadvantaged children - making sure they are safe and well cared for, whilst also ensuring they have the opportunity to have fun, make new friends and create amazing memories. We have recently purchased our new retreat in the Derbyshire Dales, and are in the process of renovating it. A new minibus will make breaks at the new retreat possible.

    The Children

The children are at the heart of every CHICKS break. CHICKS exists to make a positive impact on their lives and ensure they have a brilliant break.

    The Volunteers

We rely heavily on volunteers to run the breaks, and by giving up a week of their time they allow children to have a fantastic break from home.

    Respite Break Leaders

The Respite Break Leaders co-ordinate the breaks, ensuring that children and volunteers are happy, and that the breaks run successfully.
