Books bring so much joy into the lives of children and young people and at Blind Children UK we are determined that those living with a vision impairment do not miss out on the fun of reading. We produce fiction, non fiction and text books in a variety of different formats to suit each individual.

Blind Children UK
Sight loss can leave a child feeling isolated and afraid. Blind Children UK’s vision is for a society in which children and young people with vision impairment have the confidence, support and independence to live the life they choose. 80 per cent of a child’s learning takes place using vision. Every day a child with sight loss goes without support affects their development. Many visually impaired children are missing out on the joy of reading and learning because of sight loss issues.
Because we don't want vision impaired children to miss out on "The Gruffalo" "Horrible Histories", "The Hunger Games" and the text books they need to succeed in school and college, we provide specially adapted books tailored to their unique needs through our Customeyes service. Whether it's page colour, font, font size or spacing our team has a range of over 4000 titles it can adapt and with funding will be able to add more titles to the range.
To produce a further 100 master copies to Customeyes' range of fiction, non-fiction and text books.
Activities» Identify titles which have been requested by families and children which do not feature in our range. Collaborate with publishers and authors.
Success will be the addition of the additional titles to our range and an increase in the number of customers subscribing to the service.
Our books open up a whole world of imagination and learning, by enabling visually impaired children and young people to read the same books as their sighted friends and classmates. You cannot underestimate the impact this service has on users in terms of self esteem and confidence. One parent said "Because Kayleigh can now read on her own it makes her that little bit more independent. She can sit in bed and read with a torch, like any other child might."
Competing charities may set up their own in-house services (likelihood is low due to the cost implications). Changes in legislation or licensing laws have the potential to reduce the services we offer (likelihood is very low). Advances in technology may further reduce relevance and therefore threaten future demand. However previous knowledge from RNIB research shows 17% of kindle users went back to hard copy books.
We will communicate regularly (timescale to be agreed) to donors via email advising them of project progress and including interesting and engaging case studies where appropriate.
