Fairtrade Craft Enterprise Development

Mentor women in rural KwaZulu Natal, South Africa to become more self-sufficient through Fairtrade craft production.
With craft, business and enterprise skills training and marketing support, we empower women towards greater economic stability to benefit them, their families & the wider community.

  • Need


    Problem of high inequality, poverty and unemployment for women.
    KZN is province with highest HIV prevalence (15-49 years) for 2011 at 24.7%. Dependency ratio ranges from 61%-96.8%. Many of those of working age groups (15-64) have left community, leaving burden of care to older people. 49%-56% of households are headed by women.
    Dwellings with Piped water into house – 3.7% – 22.6%. Low levels of services and infrastructure such as poor road systems affecting access to markets for goods produced.


    Zimele will increase income generation opportunities by supporting Fairtrade craft production. We will:
    Identifying 68 existing crafters from the Self-Help Groups already started in Winterton.
    Mentor women to elect a trainer from group.
    Train the trainer in basic, production and specialist crafting techniques.
    Support trainer to train rest of group.
    Provide group with continual business training.
    Develop new product ideas with group.
    Negotiate Fairtrade price for products.
    Market products.

    Aim 1

    Higher income for 8 women by upskilling in crafting, business skills & mentoring to become trainers


    » Identify women with existing craft skills from Self-Help Groups. Support them to select 8 to become trainers, guiding them through any conflicts.
    » 8 women trained in craft Level 1 (basic skills), level 2 (product training), Level 3 (specialist skills) and ongoing business skills.
    » 8 women trained in how to train others, leadership skills, conflict resolution etc.
    » Zimele pays women for training they give as well as for any products they make to order.

    Aim 2

    Increased income for 60 women trained to produce consistently high quality Zimele Fairtrade products


    » 60 women trained in craft Level 1 (basic skills), level 2 (product training), and potentially Level 3 (specialist skills).
    » 60 women receiving ongoing business training.
    » Zimele Fairtrade purchases and markets Zimele products to audiences beyond the community.

  • Impact


    In the long term the women and their dependents will be more financially secure. This will be demonstrated by comparing baseline information with ongoing payments made to the women for products.
    Positive role models in the community, demonstrated anecdotally.
    The local economy will be more vibrant. This will be demonstrated through the value of sales.
    Ultimately, success will be measured by the women taking over the running of the Zimele programme in their area.

    Lack of sales of products. Our extensive marketing experience and connections around the world should limit this risk.

    We regularly update Facebook & our website with stories about the progress of all our projects. We also publish 3 newsletters per year. Additionally we will provide formal narrative reports every 6 months or at significant milestones as well as an annual and final report against budget, if required.

  • Background


    The project is based in South Africa in the province of KwaZulu Natal. The area is called Winterton and it is an isolated rural community in the foothills of the Drakensburg Mountains. The Zulu people have been highly affected by poverty, HIV and the legacy of apartheid. The majority of households have no adult males and there are many orphaned children. An average household consists of an elderly illiterate granny with 5 children in her care.


    68 women will directly benefit from the project, along with the dependents in their household. This is commonly taken to be 5 per household, therefore 340 beneficiaries.
    The wider community will also benefit with the increase in economic activity in the area.
    Finally, the children in the area will benefit from the positive female role models provided by these women.

    Zimele has led social development and women’s empowerment projects in the KwaZulu Natal region since Jan 2007. The Premiere of KwaZulu Natal has recognised Zimele's successes and funded a 3 year project to expand core programme throughout the province. Through the success of this programme we have gained the trust and support of the tribal leaders and the community at large.     Rosetta Stander

    Rosetta is the Founder and Executive Director of Zimele in South Africa. She has overall responsibility to ensure the project runs successfully.

    Julia Buss

    Julia is the Craft Co-Ordinator and will oversee the project as well as carry out some of the training and product development.

    Phillipa Haskins

    Phillipa is Zimele's product developer and trainer.

    Midge Joubert

    Midge is the Financial Controller and will monitor and control the budget.
