LYC Junior Apprenticeship Scheme
Singing in a choir can be a transforming experience for young children living in challenging circumstances. Through partnering with primary schools in areas of high deprivation, LYC’s Junior Apprenticeship scheme aims to remove all barriers and welcome up to 30 children into its Junior Choirs.
January 2016 - July 2016
Charity information: London Youth Choir
In some areas there are few opportunities for high quality choral singing and some have little aspiration for their children to join high profile performing groups. Many barriers exist which deny talented children the chance to work with leading practitioners and take part in major musical events. Schools have limited resources to bring in appropriate specialists to stimulate and inspire the children and they need the support and expertise from leading cultural organisations.
Working in partnership with 9 primary schools our team of choral specialists will be delivering open access workshops to select up to 30 young apprentices who will then attend weekly rehearsals and take part in performances. Specially trained chaperones will collect them from their school and bring them into the City to attend workshops and rehearsals. Parents will be given a travel allowance enabling them to join the rehearsal in order to engage in the experience.
Provide high quality choral opportunities for young children living in areas of deprivation
Activities» Select young apprentices through an open access music workshop programme
» Make arrangements for them to be escorted to weekly rehearsals
» Provide travel bursaries for parents to come and collect them
» Work closely with local Music Education Hubs and primary schools as partners
What success will look like
Witnessing, through registration records, up to 30 apprentices from the 9 primary schools attending LYC workshops and rehearsals on a weekly basis.
Inspire these young musical apprentices and nurture their love of singing
Activities» Provide opportunities for them to work with leading choral practitioners
» Introduce these young children to new and stimulating repertoire
» Provide social opportunities to meet other keen singers from all over London
» Provide opportunities for them to perform alongside LYC junior members in major events
What success will look like
Through questionnaires and interviews, seeing our apprentices flourish and thrive among their new found musical friends during the weekly rehearsals.
Broadening the demographic of our membership
Activities» Creating new access opportunities for young singers who would normally never consider joining a major musical ensemble.
» Giving these young apprentices the skills to grow and thrive in this new musical community
» Encouraging them through financial, musical and pastoral support to become full members of the LYC
What success will look like
Increasing the number of members joining our Junior Choirs from these 9 primary schools by the end of the year.
LYC will actively be welcoming youngsters from deprived families who we hope will stay on to become fully integrated members. We will be building up valuable partnerships with Hubs and primary schools, helping local areas to improve the quality of choral singing and providing pathways for other children to sing. Feedback through questionnaires and meetings with all involved will form an important part of our evaluation.
The main risk is that some of the children drop out halfway through the project due to unforeseen problems. The action we will take to mitigate this is key pastoral support from an expert team of highly trained staff. Working in collaboration with the families and key school staff we will identify and address extra areas of need and work jointly towards finding solutions.
Reports will be sent to each donor describing the progress the children are making.
In addition, all donors will be invited to our end of term performances. If the donors are really keen to see the process, we are happy to invite them along to a weekly rehearsals too!

The LYC undertook a major choral outreach project in 2014 which resulted in 66 workshops being delivered across all 33 London boroughs in schools. LYC has a highly qualified team of choral specialists who work in the primary sector. The reputation of the LYC is now firmly established and it is becoming the ‘go to’ choir for young people all over London.
