Fredericks Foundation aims to reduce unemployment by helping entrepreneurs to start up their own business by providing business loans. We are a leading micro-finance charity who supports those excluded from mainstream credit, who wish to become financially independent.

  • Need


    Self-employment is one of the fastest growing job sources in the UK due to a combination of economic conditions and people’s desire to be in more control of their working life. For many , this is the only viable option for work. Many of Fredericks’ applicants have significant barriers to work, including long-term unemployment, caring responsibilities, health issues, ex-offender status, etc. A Fredericks loan to start a business puts them on a path to economic independence.


    Government has recently stopped their Start Up scheme as they have deemed this sector to risky. Once again Fredericks finds itself one of few who are willing to help this most in need sector. We will continue to provide loans to those who cant get access to mainstream credit along with providing mentoring and heavy support. We believe everyone deserves the right to be enabled to be financially independent. £100,000 enables Fredericks to start up 20 businesses.

    Aim 1

    To alleviate poverty through work, while improving people's confidence and self-esteem.


    » We will provide affordable loans to emerging entrepreneurs turned down by the banks.
    » Our client managers along with our extensive network of volunteers, support and mentor the individual to give them the best chance of success.

    The number of loans provided will be an excellent indicator of our success. The ones who don't receive a loan we follow up as many go into employment as they have gained confidence

    Aim 2

    To promote small business and reinforce local communities through business growth


    » Fredericks will provide loans up to £20,000 for established businesses to either expand a business or to be used as a bridging loan

    We calculate jobs saved when we provide an expansion or bridging loan. This will be a good measure of success, and to measure the growth of the company since the loan, which we do.

  • Impact


    Fredericks Foundation believes by providing business support and loans to all those excluded from credit in the UK we can reduce unemployment and financial dependence.
    We save the government £ 2,000,000 for every 100 businesses started.
    The businesses started through Fredericks often benefit the wider community, by providing jobs as well as keeping money being spent locally. Disadvantaged communities become stronger by having role models, showing there is a way out of unemployment.


    A lack of funding does pose a risk to Fredericks overall. We are working hard to become sustainable, but with Government pulling out of funding this area, we are looking for funds in other areas, which we will continue to do. Fredeicks has managed to continue since its inception, including through good times and bad. We run a tight team, and have the ability to adapt to make sure that we continue to uphold the high level of support and morals we provide and have at Fredericks.


    We follow up all donors. We like to provide a break down on businesses helped, and the impact the donation has had on the people we lend to.
    We produce weekly KPI's which is and excellent way to monitor our impact and success and we are very happy to share these with our donors.

      £40,000 Client Manager To employ a client manager for another year. They will find and support 20 clients.
      £60,000 Lending pot This will enable Fredericks to startup 20 new businesses next year.
  • Background


    Fredericks currently operates in 18 counties through 'hubs'. Client managers work in these hubs as well as travelling a vast amount to meet our clients one to one. We go all the way up to Liverpool as well as West as Cornwall.
    We have a back office in Surrey, which allows all loan paperwork to be processed centrally. This means the Client managers can focus on supporting the client and back office can efficiently disburse and manage loans.


    Fredericks’ helps those who have significant barriers to work, including long-term unemployment, caring responsibilities, health issues, ex-offender status. We believe in hand up, not a hand out.
    We benefit any one with a viable business plan and the work ethic to run their own business, who is excluded from mainstream finance - which is a sizable percentage of population
    These local businesses inturn benefit the community through employing locals as well as providing services locally.

    Since inception in 2001 Fredericks Foundation has established itself as a leading micro-finance charity. We have started over 1,200 businesses, creating over 2000 jobs.
    The number of businesses we lend to still trading after 3 years is twice the national average. We believe this is because of the intensive support we give each of our clients, through our client managers and extensive network of volunteers who mentor.
    We also save the government £ 2,000,000 for every 100 businesses started.
