Supporting Young Talent

YMT offers a bridge for talented young people, from all backgrounds, into adult professional development. We want our top quality music theatre courses, for which we have bursary funds, to be accessible to all, however disadvantaged. That means more auditions (Hull, Stockton) and focussed marketing.

January 2016 - March 2016

  • Need

    Need

Engagement with YMT offers a transition to adult learning and disciplines and for many is transformational. We recruit talented young people from all over the UK, and from all social and ethnic backgrounds. Our auditions already have a wider geographical spread than similar organisations. But it takes extra effort and resource to inform and attract young people from more disadvantaged backgrounds - achieving both breadth and depth - new areas, new reach - is demanding and costly

    Solution

Additional funding will (a) enable us to visit new cities with areas of greater need and (b) increase our online visibility and especially amongst the UK fringe communities. It will enable appropriate materials to be prepared and distributed through local channels, including those directed at the less advantaged, and will enable bi-lingual print in Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Finally, it will raise awareness of the availability of (existing) bursary funding for those successful at auditions.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

To ensure that our 2016 auditionees cover a wider social and ethnic spectrum than 2015

    Activities

» Extending auditions to new cities and towns, especially those with higher levels of social disadvantage - eg newly in Hull and Stockton-on-Tees
» Preparing new marketing material in languages other than English. For example the project will enable material in Gaelic and Welsh for the first time
» Identifying and using communication channels that will reach harder to reach young people in local communities in our new audition locations.
» Developing material to 'sell' auditions as a rewarding, workshop-style experience in themselves, offering disadvantaged young people life skills.

Increasing numbers from BAME and less advantaged sectors; increasing numbers from UK and Irish fringe communities. improving take-up in our Belfast, Dublin, Inverness

    Aim 2

To audition 1500 young people for YMT's main summer programme in 2016, recruiting 350 to the company

    Activities

» England auditions will be extended to cover new areas in Hull and Stockton-on-Tees in addition to our existing 16 centres.
» In Scotland we will introduce bi-lingual promotional materials to cover all Highland and Island areas to improve take up in the Inverness centre.
» We will introduce bi-lingual promotional materials to increase take-up at our South Wales Cardiff centre and in North Wales for Shrewsbury.
» In Ireland to produce bi-lingual materials and increase distribution across the West Coast both in NI and in the Republic.

Numbers at least achieved. At least 50% take-up of places on our first visit to Hull and Stockton.

  • Impact

    Impact

People from BAME and less advantaged backgrounds are under-represented in music theatre. YMT works hard to correct this and has higher than industry average participation in its courses. Recruiting from these and from UK fringe communities also offers greater creative opportunities to our artists - diversity of performers encourages creative diversity. But there is a long way to go and this project aims to start at the 'front' end by working harder to draw people into auditions.

    Risk

The principal risk is that we do not reach further into the harder to reach parts of communities The risk is less of under-recruitment than of limited broadening of our recruitment base. Partly this will be mitigated simply by choice of our new audition locations. But partly too through better targeting of materials and closer links with teachers and schools in each locality, supported by our principal sponsors the teachers union the NASUWT.

    Reporting

A detailed report is prepared on our auditions process each year. This is informed by a thorough debrief conducted in April. In 2016 the report will set out the specific extension and deepening ambitions of this project and report outcomes.

For many this will be the most intensely creative activity of the lives; for a few (Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith) a stepping stone to further achievement.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

YMT is the leading music theatre company for young people. As an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation we are uniquely able to offer both top quality training and experience in music theatre and the highest levels of pastoral care, and to offer it to young people from all parts of the UK and from all backgrounds. Our track record speaks for itself - but the project aims to ensure that far more young people who could benefit from YMT are in fact enabled to do so.
