FAD - Creating Fashion Futures gives young people at risk of dropping out of education personal and technical skills to progress in the fashion industry; through technical workshops, advice from volunteer fashion professionals and peer mentoring the young people make realistic progression plans.

Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds struggle to access a sustainable career in the fashion industry due to lack of relevant support both technical and personal. Because of their backgrounds they do not have the networks and role models, nor the employability, social, technical or personal skills needed to progress. As a result, young people are adopting negative life patterns leading to a lack of direction, unemployment, de-motivation and anti-social behaviour
Over a period of 12 months, we will give disengaged young people life skills - confidence and self-esteem- and technical skills through workshops run by specialists for the young people to learn about the industry, an insight into options available to them and, through the FAD mentoring scheme, will develop a network of peer and professional contacts increasing their education/employment prospects and make them job-ready.

Activities» One to one meetings with peer mentors who are part of the FAD alumni, from similar backgrounds and have already progressed to the industry
» Group activities to develop confidence, resilience, time management and communications skills
» Drop-in clinics at FAD offices with tailored advice on curriculum, interview and portfolio
Through peer mentoring 80 young people develop greater resilience and improved ability to surmount social and economic barriers to progress in the creative industries
Disadvantaged young people develop technical skills to make them employable
Activities» workshops led by specialists' to develop relevant skills such as research, design, sewing, pattern cutting and drawing to make them job ready
80 young people from 18 inner boroughs of London will have attended 60 hours of technical skills workshops preparing them for a progression in the creative sector
Disadvantaged young people gain knowledge and insight into options available in creative industries

- We will make the fashion and creative industries more inclusive and will level the opportunities to access it

- We will do case studies with success stories and will bring back to our programme the young people who progress as peer mentors
We will demonstrate the success through evaluation of entry and exit questionnaires, feedback and interviews
Young people not raising to the challenge and dropping. The peer mentoring will be essential to keep them motivated.
Personal and family problems to facilitate progression - tailored advice and support
End of project evaluation report to include:
- analysis of entry and exit questionnaires showing increase in personal and technical skills
- feedback from young people and from schools/colleges/youth groups from where young people are recruited

We will run workshops at two venues, in Hackeny and Lewisham, for 80 young people of up to 18 London boroughs (Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham, Barking & Dagenham, Camden, Islington, Enfield, Haringey, Westminster, Redbridge, Wandsworth, Lambeth, Southwark, Croydon, Lewisham, Bromley, Bexley & Greenwich)
Young people from recognised disadvantaged backgrounds – ie single headed households,lower achieving ethnic groups, on free school meals, unemployed households or households in receipt of benefits, refugee/asylum seeker background or first generation to access HE. The majority (80%) will be from BME backgrounds. Some struggle with school and leave with few qualifications. Some are learning English as a second language, in or leaving care, young carers, dealing with bullying or family break up
FAD has 16 years’ experience developing extra-curricular programmes delivered in non-formal educational formats, with more than 8,000 young people from diverse ethnic, social and economic backgrounds.
FAD has a long, proven track record of working in partnerships with more than 100 schools/colleges
FAD has a database of more than 400 professionals working in the major groups of the fashion industry
FAD achievements have been recognised with awards from BITC and LEPA

FAD Peer To Peer Mentors
Up to 25 past FAD beneficiaries who have progressed to the fashion and creative industries who will facilitate peer to peer mentoring
Up to 8 specialist teachers who will transmit the technical skills and lead workshops on advice and career progress
Will pay for 10 hrs of peer mentoring
