Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) Facebook campaign

RLS-UK will increase awareness of and educate the public and medical practitioners about Restless Legs Syndrome, a neurological condition, by launching a six-month Facebook campaign. RLS can have a devastating impact on people, leading to sleep deprivation, insomnia and depression.

  • Need

    Need

There is limited awareness of RLS among the general public as well as medical practitioners. This means people living with the condition often wait years, unnecessarily, to be diagnosed. Misdiagnosis is a common problem. We want to help people, including doctors, to recognise the symptoms of RLS so they can be treated more quickly and correctly.

    Solution

We started our Facebook page in 2012 and have almost 5,000 followers. However, there are tens of thousands of people across the UK who have not yet found us. Facebook is a cost effective and efficient way for us to directly target these people and to help them find us and help to deal with their symptoms.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

Raise awareness of Restless Legs Syndrome using Facebook to target specific demographics.

    Activities

» Publish an advert on Facebook to attract people to our charity.

It costs us 20 pence to find a person living with RLS. Success will be measure in quantitative terms - for every ten pounds invested in a Facebook advert, fifty people will find us

  • Impact

    Impact

We desperately need to raise awareness of RLS. The long term change will be that people will be more familiar with the condition, will go to their doctors for help and doctors, recognising RLS, will prescribe the appropriate medication where necessary. We are already receiving feedback from doctors and patients that we are making a difference. An increase in this feedback will show our continued success.

    Risk

There is a risk that people may not engage with the advert but previous experience indicates that the likelihood of this happening is very low. Where we have previously identified that an advert was not leading to engagement, we revised it and tracked engagement post publication of the revised advert, which we would also do with this campaign.

    Reporting

Donors will receive monthly reports indicating engagement levels further to the publication of the adverts and any feedback received from patients.

    Location

We are a registered UK charity but people from all over the world contact us. Our Facebook campaign would target UK demographics but is also likely to draw international attraction.

    Beneficiaries

Simply put, people living with RLS who do not know what is wrong with them, who have never been diagnosed and whose doctors have dismissed their symptoms, a regular occurrence. RLS affects people from all walks of life, but is more pronounced in people over the age of 40.
