Art Waves - Variety of ART courses
Variety of Art courses for disadvantaged and disengaged young people aged 12-18 years who suffer from low self-esteem and difficult family situations often living in poverty. The classes will include wood etching, fruit carving, flower arranging and music. This will improve self esteem of youth.
April 2017 - March 2018
Charity information: Teen Action
Young people in Hackney are disadvantaged compared to other young people their age. The borough suffers from high unemployment and crime. YP are at risk of becoming NEET as a result of their poverty, family situations and poor education (many are not able to achieve a grade C in English and Maths GCSE.) This impacts their self esteem and young people feel trapped in the poverty cycle, where they lack skills and do not have the necessary confidence to enable them to find suitable employment.
Art Waves is designed to build and improve the confidence and skill of YP. Each course leads to accreditation from AQA at Level 2 empowering YP to achieve and move ahead. Classes will be small groups of 12 led by experienced teachers supported by an assistant. Teen Action believes in hiring teachers with experience in youth work so the course acts as a modem for making a difference to the lives of the young people. The underlying aim of the courses is to boost the confidence and job opportunitie
Young people will improve their confidence and self esteem as a result of the art classes.
Activities» Courses in arts will be led in small safe setting by a qualified teachers who have experience in youth work and building positivity in young people.
What success will look like
At the start of the course we will give a questionnaire measuring SOFT outcomes and well being of the youth. The same questionnaire will be completed at the end, capturing changes
The classes will reduce the marginalisation of young people as a result of new social opportunities.
Activities» A variety of users who are marginalised will join the ART courses and meet new friends expanding their social crowds, helping them integrate society.
What success will look like
We will hold a focus group of parents and young people to hear and evaluate opinions about the course and ask questions to help us measure our outcomes.
Young people will be less likely to become NEET when joining courses and self-fulfilling programmes.
Activities» All courses lead to AQA accreditation which is an excellent boost. Once users achieve a qualification they are more likely to continue studying.
What success will look like
We will keep data portraying the AQA certificate achievements. We will contact users once the programme is complete and measure the impact on further education or employment.
The London borough of Hackney suffers from unemployment with rates hovering between 10-11% over last year showing the high levels of deprivation compared to national level of 6%.
We aim to improve the level of educational skill and low employment rates in the area by addressing the threefold disadvantages of the youth. The low self esteem and difficult family situations marginalise our users who are then more likely to become NEET. We will remain in contact with users to measure these changes.
1. Not enough users- low risk and we have prepared a back up list of users.
2. Health and Safety Risks/ Fire risk - We have risk assessments for the building and each activity and measures will be put in place to ensure issues are dealt with.
3. Operational risks- there could be risks with staff who are hired, equipment being delayed etc. We have considered these fully and made appropriate plans.
Teen Action has employers liability of 10million and public liability for 5 million.
We will report to donors with mid project and at the end with a summary of achievements, performance and success. We will send out emails/letters and newsletters. We value our relationship with our donors and will honour this accordingly.

We will run this project for 12-18 year olds who reside primarily in the London boroughs of Hackney and Haringey. The employment rates are low in this area compared to other London boroughs. Hackney councils statistics show from the APS Jan – Dec 2013 that 9.1% of people have no qualification compared with the rate of 7.8% that applies to the rest of England. We want to ensure every young person will go on to achieve a qualification and our work is a start to get young people on the right track.
Teen Action is established almost a decade within the local community right at the heart of the problems and is very familiar with the local people and the issues they face. We have excellent networks with local schools and other organisations.
We have been awarded a Silver Level London Youth Quality Mark, a quality assurance scheme, a programme accredited by City and Guilds. We therefore have the experience and expertise necessary in order to run this project successfully.
