Into Work in Lambeth

A programme in Lambeth that will help at risk youth into employment and benefit the local community. It will provide life-changing opportunities for young unemployed people. The programme will enable relief of need and alleviation of poverty via 1-2-1 mentoring and sector-specific skills training.

  • Need

    Need

    Marginalised young people continue to be pushed towards the edges of society. Being young, unemployed and disadvantaged often has scarring and devastating effects. The longer a young person is removed from education, employment or training, the worse the long-term consequences for the individual. Ranked as the 8th most deprived borough in London, Lambeth has clear divides between the rich and poor, with high levels of social exclusion and areas of affluence and poverty often side-by-side.

    Solution

    Springboard has a proven track record of delivering successful Into Work programmes that aim to break the cycle of financial deprivation. We provide disadvantaged individuals with the skills, confidence and opportunities to achieve their potential, develop their financial capability and improve their prospects of economic independence. We will enable individuals to tackle their barriers and secure employment through employability training, work placement experience and dedicated 1-2-1 mentoring.

  • Aims

    Aim 1

    Increasing the employability and work experience of young disadvantaged individuals in Lambeth.

    Activities

    » Sector-specific employability training and accredited vocational qualifications in Health & Safety, Food Hygiene and WorldHost Customer Service.

    30 young people will achieve accredited vocational qualifications increasing their employability.


    Aim 2

    Alleviating poverty and financial hardship by supporting people into employment within hospitality.

    Activities

    » Mentored work placements within hospitality businesses with the opportunity to interview for existing vacancies and ongoing into work support.

    30 young people will move into employment, enabling them to improve their prospects in life.


    Aim 3

    Enabling individuals to break the cycle of deprivation by helping them to sustain employment.

    Activities

    » Dedicated 1-2-1 in-work mentoring and aftercare support with regular meetings and telephone calls as required.

    15 will remain in employment for at least 12 months with career progression opportunities available.


  • Impact

    Impact

    The long-term changes of the project will differ according to the goals and aspirations of each individual candidate. Springboard's Into Work programmes are about enabling people to improve their prospects and achieve their potential. Employment is a route to attaining a stable environment from which they can either continue to progress their careers in the hospitality industry or to move towards other opportunities. Springboard will request that candidates update us on their ongoing progress.

    Risk

    There is a risk that one or more of the candidates could decide to leave the project early. We would deal with this risk by offering to refer them to other organisations that are perhaps more suited to their level of need and can offer alternative services.

    Reporting

    We will report to donors through regular quarterly updates, an interim report and final evaluation of the programme.

  • Background

    Location

    With a population of nearly a third of a million people, Lambeth is both one of the largest geographical areas of any inner London borough and one of the most densely populated places in the country. Lambeth is notable for its relatively young population, mixed socio-economic profile, its complex ethnic and cultural diversity, and its visible divides between the rich and poor.

    Beneficiaries

    In Lambeth, there is a persistent pool of economically inactive people, who are economically and socially static, and excluded.The people that we will work will have a history of low levels of academic achievement, come from a background of worklessness, lack motivation, trust and hope. Many of them may be at risk or actively involved in gangs, as well as disillusioned and disaffected.

    Why Us?

    In 2014-15, Springboard helped 308 Londoners through our programmes. With a proven successful track record in supporting young people with complex needs, our programmes give training and guidance combined with mentoring support before and after a job is secured. The success of our programmes is further rooted in the mix of overall soft skills development and sector-specific training as well as the commitment of our employers to giving disadvantaged individual life-changing opportunities.
