Life in Bethnal Green Video

Create a short (8-10 min) video celebrating the life of Bethnal Green teenagers, to promote a positive image for other local teens and outsiders alike. Book-ended with an editorial talking about wanting to show people who the youth of East London really are and their hopes and dreams for the future.

  • Need


    Perceived lack of positive role models for Bethnal Green youth and and misrepresentation of all Muslim youth as potential threats to British society.


    It will give East London teens an outlet to express their outlook on life and their hopes and dreams for the future. As well, it will provide a window for outsiders to see into the lives of our local youth and help them to view them not as "other" but as an integral part of our social fabric.

    Give local youth an outlet to express themselves.


    » Creating a documentary video celebrating their lives.

    Have at least 25 local youth participate in the creation of the video.

    Aim 2

    Help people get to know teenagers from a variety of backgrounds; demystify Bristish-Muslim culture.


    » Promote the "Life in Bethnal Green" video with a launch party and online access.

    Have at least 500 hits to the online video in the first week.

  • Impact


    This project will give local teens new skills in video production and storytelling, as well as give them pride and confidence in their cultural identies. It will also promote a positive image for urban youth, both Muslim and non-Muslim alike. Success would be coverage from at least 2 local (London-based) news outlets and 1 national or international outlet.


    There is a risk that we don't get enough youth to participate. To counter this, we have fostered links with two local secondary schools, as well we have strong links with local families via our current programming.


    We will send out an email bulletin at the end of each milestone (e.g. after the launch event, after the videos have been collected, once the final version has been edited, etc.).
