Esso Community Sports & Youth Project
Sport for development can be a powerful approach to empower young people to meet the challenges of poverty and disadvantage. The Esso Community Sports & Youth project will provide sport for development programmes for some of the most vulnerable young people living in the Esso Community of Arusha,
January 2016 - December 2016
Charity information: YES! Tanzania
In Arusha about one third of working aged people are unemployed of which young people aged 15 to 25 years make up nearly half, approximately 50,000 individuals. 75% of Arusha's housing is unplanned and many of these young people reside in slum areas and become engaged in risky and unhealthy activities. Whilst some support is available, this project would provide opportunities for young people to engage more effectively with organisations that can help them address the challenges they face.
This project will engage the most vulnerable young people aged between 15 and 24 years from the Esso Community, a slum area of Arusha, in sports activities as a vehicle through which they can receive support to access vital housing, health and education services. This will provide opportunities for these young people to participate in a range of sports activities at the local Sports Ground and also youth development activities such as life-skills, vocational skills training and health education.
To increase the numbers of vulnerable young people participating in community sport.
Activities» Sports posts and equipment will be provided.
» Local community sports leaders will be identified, recruited and trained to deliver sports activities.
» A regular programme of sports activities will be provided at the Pallotti Sports Ground in the Esso Community of Arusha.
Success will be engaging with at least 100 vulnerable young people from the Esso Community in sports activities.
To increase the number of vulnerable young people accessing youth development programmes.
Activities» Youth development providers will be identified and their services will be secured for the project.
» Youth development programmes will be designed in the areas of health & well being, education and employment.
» A regular programme of youth development activities will be delivered at the Pallotti Sports Ground in the Esso Community.
Success will be engaging with at least 100 vulnerable young people from the Esso Community in youth development activities.
The project will result in more young people living a healthier lifestyle, being in education/training and being in employment.
We will demonstrate the success of this project by monitoring the number of vulnerable young people participating in the project and completing the youth development programmes. We will also obtain feedback from the participants and the programme leaders.
There is a risk that some of the participants will disengage from the project, particularly with regards to the youth development activities.
We have dealt with this by working with local partners who are experienced in working with vulnerable young people and are skilled at maintaining their engagement in youth development programmes.
Reports will be prepared on a quarterly and annual basis which shows the numbers of young people participating in the programmes and the number of activities delivered during that period. Feedback from young people participating in the programmes and case studies of individuals will also be reported

Arusha is Tanzania’s second largest city with a population of around 416,000. It is experiencing rapid commercial growth and attracts young people from rural and other urban areas seeking employment. Many young people in Arusha have become disaffected from education and have limited qualifications or skills for work and therefore, their opportunities for employment are very limited. Esso is an unplanned slum area within Arusha where large numbers of vulnerable young people are living.
The project would benefit the most vulnerable young people living within the Esso community of Arusha. These young people will generally be aged between 15 and 25 years of age and will not be engaged in education, training or employment. These young people are likely to be engaging themselves in risk taking behaviours, such as smoking, drug taking and multiple unprotected sexual relations, and as a result are endangering their own lives as well as becoming more marginalised from the community.
