  • Need

Energy Fit Kitchens helps vulnerable people in Cornwall to cook affordable meals and reduce their energy bills. It is an integrated approach to tackling the "heat or eat" dilemma faced by low income households.

The project provides sociable slow cooker workshops for vulnerable people which focus on saving energy in the kitchen and affordable healthy eating. One to one advice is also offered on individual issues with energy bills, cold homes, damp and mould. At the end of each event all participants benefit from a slow cooker with recipe book to take away, along with a completed checklist for further action and an energy monitor.

  • Background

Cornwall is one of the UK’s poorest regions and is in the top 10 most deprived areas in Western Europe. Fuel poverty in Cornwall is above the national average and increasing, due to low incomes, poor housing and lack of mains gas. There are 20 Food Banks in Cornwall and we are developing links with them to ensure users receive energy saving advice and support. The lowest income families spend around 20% of their income on food.

Low income vulnerable households, including families, disabled occupants and over 60's.
