Charity information: Nene Valley Railway
Nene Valley Railway promotes the use of restored carriages and historic engines. To keep the trains in their full glory and of use to the public, schools and businesses we need to provide a high standard of service, events and catering. For example we are hoping to upgrade on-train catering by refurbishing the Wagon-Lits style buffet car, fixing a generator to it, and using it for corporate clients and evening dining trains.
Sponsorship will enable us to keep running and maintaining the trains, provide a better service and be able to give customers and clients a better understanding of the days of steam. It will also help educate future generations about the industrial revolution and evacuation during the war. Looking after the carriages and engines is a skilled job that is being lost with each passing generation.
To buy equipment to ease on train catering; a generator, refurbish the buffet car, refurbish the CCT
Activities» Alan Boswell Group’s Peterborough office will participate in a sponsored endurance race on the pump trolley to achieve their fastest possible time.
» Local companies will be invited to compete in a bid to beat the Team’s time whilst raising further sponsored funds for the charity.
Success will be demonstrated by having a catered event using the equipment bought, being able to run more dining trains, using a fully equipped carriage.
The funds raised will enable the Railway to offer a higher standard of corporate events. This increased custom and income will enable more trains to be run and other projects to be undertaken such as refurbishing engines and the Old Station building, establishing a museum at Wansford and a Rail Mail museum at Ferry Meadows.
As the pump trolley is old we risk damaging it, but we have two people on site who can fix it as we go. It has been used for Pump Trolley Experiences and at Kings Cross so all problems have been looked at and dealt with.
We have a website, Facebook page and we are on Twitter. Alan Boswell Insurance Advisers Ltd who are setting up the challenge have an employee who volunteers for Nene Valley Railway, so she will be directly involved and report back to them.

Wansford station is the headquarters of the Nene Valley Railway.
The line runs through the Nene Valley, overlooking beautiful Cambridgeshire countryside. Nene Valley Railway is the UK’s leading international steam attraction, based at Wansford Station, and covering the stations of Ferry Meadows, Orton Mere, Yarwell Junction, and Peterborough.
Local school children will have more opportunity to come and learn about steam, we also take on local apprentices in engineering, catering and civil engineering. We also help the local police forces with training sniffer dogs and crash-training. We have a good relationship with groups getting people back into work and special needs groups who like to use the trains for a day out.
We have one of only four working pump trolleys in England so this is a unique opportunity to use a piece of heritage to set a challenge.
