Supported accommodation for homeless young people

We provide practical and emotional support for vulnerable young homeless people aged 16 to 25 in the Cotswold District area. Young people who have nowhere to go, due to abuse, leaving care or family breakdown, come to stay at Chyp and we help them get their lives back on track.

  • Need

    Need

All of Chyp’s clients are economically and educationally disadvantaged and Chyp and have suffered from complicated and insurmountable challenges in their lives. No young person is homeless without something going seriously wrong in their life at some point. Each young person has their own unique set of problems requiring individual attention. Most importantly they need somebody they can trust and rely on, often for the first time in their lives, that's where Chyp comes in.

    Solution

Chyp realises that providing a roof over these young people’s heads isn’t enough. They need help and support to get their lives on track and start living independently. CHYP has demonstrated that intensive support at an early stage can improve the life skills and employability of these young people preventing the slide back into homelessness and benefit dependency.

To provide supported accommodation for young homeless people aged 16 to 25 in Cotswold District.

    Activities

We receive 1 or 2 referrals a week and our rooms are always full plus we have a waiting list of people need our support.

    Aim 2

To help these young people get their lives back on track and live independently in the future.

    Activities

» Providing practical and emotional support, help them overcome their challenges, find education, training or work and housing to live in independently.

Success for us is when our young people are confident enough to live independently which is what is achieved in most cases.

  • Background

    Location

Cirencester and support throughout Cotswold District

    Beneficiaries

There are increasing numbers of homeless young people, particularly in the 16-18 year age group due to rising number of family breakdowns and those leaving care aged 16 who are unprepared for independent living. SHELTER has highlighted the Cotswolds as one of the least affordable areas in the UK in which to live due to the large gap between average earnings and housing costs. Landlords will not accommodate under 18s and there is a severe lack of affordable housing.

  • Why Us?

    Why Us?

We have been working with young people since 1986 and in this time have helped over 500 young people. Our young people have said they do not know where they would be without Chyp and that we are their "family" when they have none else to turn to.
